As someone who pretty much exclusively shoots on film SLRs, I've decided lately that what I need is a functional compact camera for carrying with me day-to-day (when the bulk of an SLR isn't an option but you still don't wnat to miss photo opportunities).

Something that lets me be creative and manually adjust the settings when required, or can just be a point and click when required. Most importantly, It really does need to be small enough to fit in a coat pocket, even if it is a little bulky in there.

My short list is as follows:
  1. Canon Powershot S100
  2. Panasonic Lumix LX5
  3. Olympus ZX-1
  4. Fujifilm X10
This is pretty much the order in terms of preference so far from a quick hands on in a few camera shops with the cameras and a little online research.

What do you guys think? Have I missed any contenders I should be considering? Are there any slightly cheaper models I've overlooked, or previous versions of the current crop that offer better value for money now?
 
I have a GF1+20mm f1.7 which is just about a coat pocket camera. The GF2 and 3 are even smaller AFAIK.
 
Canon S100. I have the S95 and I'm amazed every time I use it. I never go anywhere without it.
 
Have you had a look at the Nikon Coolpix P7000. Just been having a look at a site that compares cameras and matches your criteria. I've been half looking for a compact with a viewfinder and decent zoom and the Coolpix suits what I'd want from a compact. Though as I've got Canon dslr's it would be a shame not to go for a Canon compact too.
 
Looking around I see the S95 can be had for £230ish and the S100 for £385+.

I'm suddenly thinking the S95 may be great value for what I want from a camera. Small and pocketable, manual settings, good results, something for grabbing opportunities that might otherwise be missed or wasted on a camera phone.

Most of the new functionality and the improvements (while significant in some key areas) are not really in areas that bother me much - such as video recording.
 
I would also suggest the S95, unless the S100 has a further that you particularly want (and want to pay £100+ for).
