Hi, i'm really new to this game but enjoying it and exploring my fairly new nikon 3100, had it around four months now. The problem is a want a telephoto lens something like nikkor 55-200mm, for bird close ups and general animal and zoo pics. The problem is i don't know what i'm talking about when looking at the various lens that are on offer. Would the above be fine for my needs? My budget is upto £200. Is the 70-300mm better or do i even need it so early. I don't want to waste good money on this. Many thanks. Will share when i get pics with the right lens.
 
the 55-200 AF-S DX VR is a cracking budget lens

BUT not 'long' enough for 'close-up' bird shots

the 70-300 is much better but out of your budget even 2nd hand

I understand there is now a 55-300 maybe more at your price level

do a search round the Nikon Dealers....good luck...!

To give you an idea, this shot was taken with a 70-300mm zoom (on my Canon, not Nikon, but it'll give you a rough idea)

That was at 300mm at a wildlife park with the tiger pretty much in the middle of a large enclosure.

I'd say you'd need a 300mm for any decent zoo / wildlife park shots. 200mm just won't get you close enough (unless Canon and Nikon render totally differently!)
 
Have a good look at a 70-300 VR. Its a cracking lens and regularly available second hand. Have a look at www.MPBphotographic.co.uk one of the site sponsors. They have a 70-300VR for sale for £319, well worth the outlay in my opinion. You get a guarantee too, or look around the For Sale forums, they come up now and again at good prices.
They are nice and sharp and not too big and with VR it lets you use to its full potential hand held.

Yes a longer lens always helps as you need more luck to get a good shot with a shorter lens, though this one was with my 18-125 Sigma - up until recently the only lens I used.

But on the other hand longer lenses are more demanding of the photographer, to get it 'right'.

whereas the 300mm is a great lens, what can we suggest for £200..?

limiting - i know - perhaps - wait - gain experience - save - get the 70-300 VR later...............:thumbs:
