Morning all,

I cant help but love these new Fuji cameras.

Originally I bought a Fuji X20 for taking on holiday, rather than lugging my 5D and associated lenses around. Slowly, but surely that X20 has worked its way into my wedding photography kit bag, and has infected me with the Fuji virus.

Since then I have bought an X100, which although I have only owned a VERY short while... I am already loving it to bits, and it is being used at weddings.

It has made me really consider "the move" to fuji in a more complete way...

Fuji seem to have a whole host of CSC bodies... many of which appear fairly similar. I have read up on most of these, and cant really see a huge amount of difference between some.

If you were recommending a good starter Fuji camera and lens to see if you could get into the Fuji way of life (CSC type camera) what would you recommend? Ideally 2nd hand, and with a lens that I could try out and use, and then sell on, if I wasnt keen on the move.

I dont want to sell my 5Ds just yet.....but wouldnt mind getting a Fuji and lens system to play with - to help me make my mind up.

The X20 shares the leaf shutter from the X100, so mainly very high speed sync flash stuff... Combined with a 112mm f2.8 lens, this can create a sort of pseudo shallow DOF look - similar to what you'd get with an ND filter and large off-camera strobe lighting. With a regular DSLR you'd need a lot more power from a strobe, and a good ND filter to get to 1/200th sync speed - whereas the X20 works fine at over 1/1000th
 
Keep any eye on the Fuji refurb shop - http://shop.fujifilm.co.uk/refurbished-digital-cameras - for red price specials. There were some excellent deals on X-E2 bodies yesterday (£360 using the PAYPAL12 code* for an extra 10% off) and there has recently been a good deal on the X-E1 with 18-55mm (£390, same discount code).


*works on bodies and bodies-with-lens deals on the refurb shop, but doesn't usually work with lenses on their own.

EVF is better in the X-E1
LCD is better in the Pro1
OVF only in Pro1

Other than that, its just cosmetics?

Ah, but the X-Pro 1 has the word "Pro" in it's name, so it must be better ;)

Back to your OP, I was a dedicated Canon user with a 5D and several lenses. I've now ditched the lot for a X-Pro 1 and don't regret it a bit. It's taken me a while to get to grips with the many options available and to work out which settings work best for me, but I'm really pleased I made the move.

One frustration that a lot of early-adopters and butterfly-buyers have had is that Fuji's extremely aggressive marketing strategy with special offers/cash-back/free-lens deals has seen significant drops in the new price of bodies and lenses. Taking a look at the Classifieds section on this forum and others, you'll see secondhand X-E2 bodies advertised at significantly more than the refurbished deals available yesterday. Unless you're very canny about the deal you get now, you can't guaruntee that you'll get it all back when you come to sell - used prices for the 18mm, 35mm and 60mm lenses in particular all took a heavy hit at the start of the year when Fuji started handing out free lenses like they were sweeties.
 
The X-A1 with 16-50 lens is £229 at Fuji refurb with 10% discount, is a very good csc to start you of at a great price too ! :-)
 
I have had and used the xe 1, xe 2, x pro1, & x100 for weddings and have kept the x100 and x pro 1 there is just something about them that feels right to me I couldn't get on with just the evf of the other 2

Thats sort of what worries me.
With the X100, I hardly ever use the EVF (I thought it was meant to give you an exposure preview.. but it doesnt) so I dont see the point in the EVF really, and the histogram doesnt change as you change settings etc... so mainly just use OVF.

Worried that although the XE1 looks great, that Id wish it had the big bright OVF
 
The EVF can give you an exposure preview with the ILC x-series bodies, definitely the X-Pro1 and I'm certain that means the X-E1/2 as well. It's a menu option, but not switched on by default.

I rarely use the OVF, I enjoy using the EVF more than I thought I would before I bought the X-Pro1.
 
Having used an X100 soley for a year, I bought an X-E2 on release. I reckon it's taken me about 9 months to get used to the EVF, and now I find it very good and don't miss the OVF. I have an X-E1 as well, but the X-E2 really is much nicer to use (and faster).
 
Hi there. I've recently sold all of my canon 5D mk1 and lens and gone for a fuji X-T1.
The EVF really worried me. I'd looked at the x100s and didn't really like the EVF. then I looked through the Xt1! The bigger EVF makes a huge difference (to my eyes). Really worth checking out if your coming from a proper slr like you are.

It's not been long but I don't miss my 5D at all

The X-T1 has a better balance in the hand from the Xe2, and again, to me, this was important.

The 18-55 kit lens is pretty good to. But the 35 and 56 are stunners. The 35 is a nice size on the camera...

It's a big jump in cost but well worth it to me.

Don't forget (I'm sure you already know) the 35mm on the xt1 is more like a 50mm on your 5D etc....

If you go to the refurb section on the fuji uk shop you can get emails when items come in stock. They seem to have a quick turn around. I've just ordered a x100s :)

Got to agree with Bruce & Twist above, I have had XE-1, Xpro1 and now have the XT1. If you can afford it, it 's the more recent camera so the features are improved over the others mentioned (not tried XE-2). It's worth it to me just for the better EVF. Also, it performs and handles more like a DSLR compared to the other models, IMO.
 
I am just about to sell my XPro setup. I love the look and feel of the camera, but for what I do its an expensive toy! Need to find funds to dabble in a bit more film and possibly a new Nikon body if the D750 looks good. IQ is up there with the best and the 35mm is a peach of a lens.

Good luck with your new purchase. I really think the xt1 is the best choice when coming from a full sized dslr.
