Hi Guys, would appreciate some advice...

I was getting my camera ready to take some photos at my sons ice hockey match today.

I have been charging my batteries and have been using my camera this morning, and as I came to switch it on again to format my memory card, it wont power up ?

I have 3 fully charged batteries and tried each one, even tried them in my grip and nothing !!

I have tried it with and without a lens on, with and without memory card, but still nothing

Any Ideas ??

I am panicking a bit here :'(
 
Possibly a blown fuse? This can happen to bodies as they get old.

I take it you've tried them without the grip attached?
 
That was my first thought ?? then my worry is, do they have replaceable fuses ??

Yes tried all combinations of battery configurations
 
Yes they will have replacement fuses but its not something you can do yourself, so I think it will need a trip to a service centre (I did see an online guide on this but it was horrendously complicated with the camera seemingly in bits!). No idea on the costings though, but I suspect it wont be cheap...

Fuse is part of something called the DC-DC board and costs a fixed fee of £153 from Canon at Elstree, that price includes a service and sensor clean
 
Thanks for the info guys - Doesn't sound promising, I have just tried to ring Canon , Lehmans etc.. and they dont answer calls at the weekends :'(

At £153, wonder if its worth looking for a 2nd hand 30D on here ?
 
Thinking about selling my 40D which has done under 1k actuations, no guarantee, but should think its got a goodly amount of life left in it

If you were interested post a wanted ad and could go from there

(Mods, hope this is ok, trying to help this chap out more than anything as i'm not desperate to sell)
 
True about the "no guarantee it wont happen again" but just wondering if the problem has occured because of the age of the camera :shrug: (Don't know how old it is - is there a way I can tell ??) whats to say something else wont go wrong due to its age ?

I think a repair is going to be my cheapest option but just means I will be "without camera" for ages I guess ??
(Just as my sons Ice Hockey season starts today - sods law or what ?)

Does anyone know how long Canon or the likes of Lehmans take to repair a camera ?

I'm assuming you can tell the age from the serial number and canon would be able to tell you how old it was.

Think canon usually take a couple of weeks. There are other places like Fixation that might be quicker.

Elstree turned round my old 40D with a similar problem in ten days and that was over Christmas
 
I think the general consensus is that its looking like my camera will be taking a mini-break to Elstree for a week or so in the near future :'(
 
Reckon so James, at least your sensor will get a clean and any bits of crud on the focus screen will get removed too
 
Not was I was hoping for (was hoping quick fuse swap) but hey-ho the joys of owning a DSLR I guess.

Have you checked that all the various doors and covers are shut?
 
Could be the little micro switch under the battery flap, door has a little peg that activates it

All you can do is check that switch, if not take out all the batteries including the little one for the clock, whip the memory card out and leave it for about half an hour before reinstalling the lot and trying again

If it still doesn't work reckon its that fuse board I mentioned, not that uncommon with cameras of a certain age

I tried the taking everything out, leaving it half an hour and did have a little fiddle with the little micro switch under the battery flap and HEY PRESTO, :thumbs: the camera has come back on :clap:

I am so chuffed, all the razor blades are now back in their packets and the camera is fully functional again, Thanks Again !!!!!

Really pleased for you James, the reinstalling was what Canon suggested when mine failed and read about the micro switch somewhere or other.

Alas I had to pay the 153 quid, but great it worked for you and you are back in the game for the next ice hockey match
