Help: My Nikon 28-70

Bought it last week and arrived last Tuesday.

Used it a few times no problems at all until last night. Now I am a complete noob when it comes lenses. It has a manual/auto manual focus option.

When taking the camera out last night just after sunset, as I was shooting the sunset then auto focus stopped working...

Got home within the light of the house and it works fine and again it works fine this morning...

Any thoughts on this? Am I being paranoid? Because it was hardly dark after the sunset at all.
 
Not sure if this will help you but I had the same thing with my Nikon & a 50mm lens recently. Turned out I had to connect it so that it made that click as it engages as it's twisted round but then I had to twist it ever so slightly back. Not sure why this happened but the lens & camera is fine now. Not sure if this is relevant to your problem-hope it's an easy fix for you
 
The AF motors on these are first-generation and prone to failure it seems, I've read a lot of similar accounts. Did it make any odd noises at all?
 
Nope no odd noises. Now works fine :S It just I spent a lot of money on it and I don't want it to break. So I was thinking of opening a dispute on ebay where I bought it.
 
I've had a similar thing happen to me. Turned out that cleaning the lens contacts fixed it.
Worth a try. Not sure I'd want to open a dispute yet !!
 
It is likely to be the auto focus motor. Mine went too. It started off as an intermittent problem and then died.
Also just after I had bought it. :D
Cost about £300 to put right. :|

Screw that. I'd just bought it so it went back.
 
My Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5 did the same..If I just twisted the whole lens again if i was going to take it offand twist it back again(not much movement)
then the auto would work again. It would work everytime i took the lens back off and on again.
