Hi there,

I need a telephoto lens for a zoo trip I'm going on but am rather confused as to what to get

I'm going to hire one initially before taking the plunge and buying one but I'm really not sure what to go for?

I have a Nikon D7000 and any help would be much appreciated

There are lots of tele's on the market and can get confusing. Here is a few of the most popular on the market at various prices. In order of cheap to mid price. The cheapest being around £150 and the top being £450. You can obviously spend a lot more.

nikon 55-200mm vr
nikon 55-300mm vr
Tamron 70-300mm VC
nikon 70-300mm vr

How much do you want to spend?

Hi Ellie I would be tempted to go with a mid range zoom lens for Zoo work, flexibilty is the key imo at a Zoo. As for which one  hopefully a Nikon user will come along and advise a bit better for you.

Thanks guys.

I'm tempted to hire the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR because it looks like a nice piece of kit

If you go for the 70-200 zoom then you may find it a bit short for some animals. Adding a 1.4 tele convertor would increase the reach, the 1.4 would make it nearly 300 with only 1 stop added to the aperture.

The Nikon 300mm f4 telephoto is a great lens but as a telephoto you lose the zoom ability for composition. It will also take a convertor for added reach.

Lenses for hire do rent out the sigma 50-500 in a Nikon fit.

How about the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm VR then?

Pricing not bad for hiring @ £65 for a week so I can have a good play with it and decide if it's for me :)

Maybe have a look at the Sigma 150-500mm a very flexible zoom lens- I use mine all the time

Have you considered the weight issue?

I have the Sigma 150-500 OS and 70-200 OS which are both heavy lenses to be toting around all day if you are not used to them.

I also have a Nikkor 55-300 VR which I had before the other 2 and has been used the most as it is the lightest to carry about .

I also use a Ladies Black Rapid strap with all 3 which makes a huge difference.
