Help needed - long exposures during the day?

Hello everyone,

This may sounds like a stupid question but I am new to SLR's so please bare with me. I have done a few long exposure shots but only at night time (motorway shots, etc), I tried once during the day and it was a bright day but shot simply came out all white, I assume this is because I was using a long exposure and too much light was being taken in?(along 15 seconds I think). How do I stop the shots from becoming totally white? What do I need to adjust or do I need some form of filter?

I have a nikon D40 with standard 18-55mm lens.

Thanks in advance
Clarke

Hi Clarke,

You need a neutral density filter to reduce the light hitting the sensor so you can get longer exposures. You need to decide how much you'd like to reduce exposure by and then buy one suitable.

Hi Hugh,

Thanks for the reply, I'll have a look around for some filters then :)

Thanks

Before spending out any money, try whacking your ISO to the lowest it will go to (is it really ISO 200 on the D40?) and aperture to its smallest (f/22-38 for that lens depending on the zoom) to see if that will give you a sufficiently long exposure.

Actually, seeing this post I'd say you haven't got a hope in hell of getting a 15s exposure by just changing the ISO and aperture, so filters is looking like your only way. You should be able to achieve 1/15s though. ;)

strange!

I find I have a similar problem, but only on DSLR!

I have used my ol' praktica to take 30s+ shots during the day with a "standard" (aka not wide angle/zoom) lens at min apperture using an external light meter. The pics came out great (200iso fuiji something....)

But then, five minutes later, when I took out the 40D, I whacked the ISO to 100, apperture to 22 or whatever, and I couldn't get an exposure longer than 15s???

pics were of same place with same brightness (of a beach in wales) no clouds getting in the way of the light etc... but the photos were equally exposed.

this really confuzzled me, but I guess its down to the lens'?
