Ive had a Canon 400D since the special offer came of for this 'kit' with the standard 18 - 55 lens. I bought some time ago a Sigma DG 70 - 300 lens. I was looking at a lens to replace the two but found that this could be a little expensive and I was told in the camera shop in Newcastle that I would loose quality. I was advised to buy a second hand Canon 400D. But being a novice Im not sure what to do. I work 3 days per week now having retired from teaching so will have at times 2 days to think about travelling in the area initially to take photographs also try black and white photography. Just wonder if anyone can offer any advice on which way I should go, any kit that could be recommended etc

Why would you want to buy a 2nd hand 400D when you already own one? Typo?

I was advised that I could have one camera, the one I have with one lens and fit the other lens to the 'new' camera

What do you photograph that you would need two bodies? sports?

I tend to shoot whatever takes my fancy and have four lenses with one body, the American version of the 400D. I have never felt the need to have two bodies as I don't need to switch quickly from one lens to another

That sounds odd, Also when the sales guy said that you will "lose quality", in what sense? Surely upgrading your lenses to better lenses will only benefit your image quality? :suspect:

What the sales guy meant to say is that he will be losing 'money'.

unless he means getting a superzoom 18-300ish to fill the range - loosing quality maybe?
i dunno, agree with tina, you probs dont need another camera?

Sorry Ive not been back but I just need a little guidance now on this issue as Im new to photography. A new lens will cost of course and I already have two which can do the job. The thing about the new lens will be that it saves changing all the time but I will have two lens which do not get used

Sell those two and get the canon 28-135mm lens. I had it on my 400d and never took it off.

I don't really understand what's going on here but I think you're thinking about buying another camera body to mount your two lenses on to cut down on lens changes?

I you want to cut down on lens changes you could go for a superzoom like a 18-250mm. These lenses seem to get good reviews and I'm pretty sure one would perform well enough for you. I don't think you'll find much of a reduction in quality as to be honest your existing lenses (if the internet review sites are accurate) are rather ordinary. Yes, superzooms are expensive but maybe you could sell your existing lenses and put the money towards one general purpose lens?

Sounds like the salesman was trying to pull a fast one - lenses on SLR cameras are interchangeable, that's the point.

Spend your money on better lenses.
