Hi all being a fairly newbie to photography I am hoping someone can offer some sensible advice to what lenses should I buy to improve my kitbag!

Currently have a Gripped Nikon D80, 50mm f1.8, 18-55 f3.5-5.6 and 55-200 f4-5.6 VR

I have been looking to chop in and upgrade the 18-55 kit lens to fund a new walk about lens or ultra wide angle but don't really know what to buy.

I have given thought to the following but still unsure.

Nikon 16-85 f3.5/5.6 VR
Tokina 11-16 f2.8 in which case will keep the 18-55 until funds allow upgrade.

Any advice welcome thanks

Typical upgrades to kit 18-55 would be 18-105 VR (not a bad lens, guess around £140 Second hand), Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (guessing around £200-£250 SH) and the Nikon 18-70 (around £120 SH). The 18-70 is a great lens for the money, the tamron is very well regarded and either of those would be my choice rather than the 16-85.

The Tokina is a good lens, also have the Sigma 10-20 to consider (around £270 SH).

So you could get both!

16-85 is too expensive for what it gives

your 55-200 VR shoots above its price so keep that

as Simon says the 18-70 is well regarded - but what about a Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 - love mine !! dont need OS so about £140-160 used

dont rush into a Tok 11-16 - lotsa money and many people dont "really" need 11mm

11-16 is a cracking lens but it's no walkabout partner. Something that covers the 18-55 or 24-70 ranges would be ideal but bear in mind if you think there's any chance of moving to full frame in future, try to acquire lenses now that you can take with you. There's nothing wrong with DX lenses but they won't work on a D700 or better.

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 would be my suggestion, go for the earlier (and better) non-motorized version and you should be able to get a secondhand one for under £200.

I should read the OT before replying.

Another vote here for the Siggy 17-70. I loved mine. Light and very sharp. Great Value for Money lens.

Out and about in Europe right now currently getting the best out of the 18-70. Huge recommendation from me - very sharp lens for the money. Also works well alongside the 70-300VR for great reach.
