I've had a windfall and before swmbo puts 'my' money in savings, i'm taking a cut for equipment.

I thought i might like to go ff but i have a real itch for a nikon d7200 and sigma sports 150-600mm,which will cost c. 2100 gbp uk stock new.

I currently have 2 x d7000, one with tamron 150-600 the other with nikon 16-85 attached.

Wildlife is my main use, so i was thinking of the above new purchases and selling one d7000 and the tamron and 16-85 lenses.
I've still got a kit 18-55 and could add a 35 or 50mm for the family images.

Any thoughts please?

Should i be considering something else, new or used?
 
I love the D7200, it's almost always on my 500 f4 and you would see a vast difference from the D7000.
What do you think the Sigma Sport has that your Tamron doesn't?
 
tbh, i don't know, just reading about it being a great lens and assuming it's a tad better than the cheaper ones.
I don't think a ff body would do much for me as any prints would/will be a max of 10"x8" for friends and family.
I do think that a d7200 is a certainty, i'm not afraid to buy used but am after any lens advice.

You are paying for the build, there is some discussion on the net that the cheaper 'C' model is actually better or at least as good in IQ as the 'S' ... I wonder how much better either is than the Tamron.
 
Hmm, i'll def' get a d7200 and try that with the tamron first, i can't fault it tbh
 
I've been thinking about the 150-600 on the d7200 but the images I've seen just haven't sold me. I know it's a much bigger push but if you can get a 300 f4 pf and 1.7tx you'll have 510 f6 (I think). May be slower af but the quality will be much better.

Or if you can swing it and you're really silly like I'm thinking of being, a used 300 f2.8 and 2x tc III!

The 150-600mm's are surprisingly good and would be surprised if the 300mm with TC would be better (but happy to be proven wrong ;)). The Sigma S is sharper, but not by much and it's debatable whether it's worth the extra weight and cost.

As for the OP, if your primary photography is wildlife/birds then you're probably better off with the D7200 rather than something like the D750. Of course you could always get the D810 and crop/use 1.5x DX mode (giving 15.9mp iirc) for wildlife, then use FF glory for everything else.

Do you have any examples of the 150-600 which are surprisingly good? I'm not saying you're wrong, just I haven't seen them.
 
I've just bought a "second hand" 150-600 sport and use a D750. I've got some Non league football pics in the Sports section and there are some great shots in the Sigma 150-600 Sport section.....take a view as I think you will be surprised.

I used to shoot with a 300mm f/2.8 and a 2x extender on a 5DMKIII... Nowadays I'm shooting on a D750 and a D7200 with the Sigma 150-600mm Sport. The Sigma is much more than I expected for the money. Optically, I'm as happy with this lens as I was with the prime (and I didn't think that was possible). I've got a few photos on my Flickr stream if you want to have a look.

To the OP... I'd say that if you're unhappy with the Tamron, I'd be very surprised if you'd be unhappy with the Sigma Sport. :) The D7200 is a brilliant camera and if you need the reach, it's a definite improvement over the D7000. If you'd rather gain ISO performance as a result of the fairly slow aperture on the Sigma, I'd put it on a D750 instead. I'll use the D7200 in good light and my D750 when the weather's a bit naff (which is often the case in Wales). :D

Well I did say "I'm not saying you're wrong, just I haven't seen them." ;) I'm really impressed by these and this is exactly the sort of thing I wanted to see! Of course I'd rather spend £1300 on the Sigma than £3000 on the 300 2.8+2xtc, so this thread has definitely helped me :)

@tom24 Sorry for taking over your thread! But hopefully you've got something useful out of it too!
 
I would say though that as good as the images are, this is 6.3 at 600mm and the 300 2.8+2x would be 5.6 at 600mm. I guess it just depends if the extra 1/3rd stop is worth it given the dull UK weather. I suppose it depends how good the OS is to drop the SS, and how good the high ISO shots are on a d7200 (which hasn't arrived yet - the reason I'm upgrading from my d7000 is partly due to the noise I was getting above about 800 ISO).
 
I'll take it easy, get a d7200 to try with the tamron first and see where i go from there (d810 ? lol)
Hate being sensible but probably better to take wee steps at a time.

Still looking for further opinions though.

True, but the Tamron that I used can now be picked up for under £600 ... you will never get a 300 2.8 at anything like that price, even the old AF versions are around £1k when they come up.

Well some of already been posted, and I guess it depends on your expectations as to whether you find them surprising. My expectations weren't overly high, but have been very impressed.

Here's a couple that were taken on a pretty overcast day, and I think detail is very good considering the poor light (better viewing on flickr as I find this site oversharpens)

Cool, I"m sure you'll be happy as it's a cracking camera. Are you also getting a 150-600mm and if so which one?

Ahh yes, so he does. He was talking of getting the SIgma S wasn't he although how much better that would be over the tamron is debatable ;)

Glad i checked my email a short while ago, bank had put a stop on the order 'cos they thought it was an unusual transaction, sorted now and order processed.

Never had that when paying via paypal but this time i had went through checkout with debit card, i suppose it's good that someone is keeping a check on things though.

I've never tried the Sigma S but the Tammy is weather sealed so not sure how much better built the sigma is tbh. I like the idea of the Sigma dock, but i don't like the idea of the extra weight as the Tammy is heavy enough and just about my limit of comfortably handholding tbh.
