Hi Everyone,

Before people say that i should read the beginner guideline thread and other similar posts, i have spent the last day doing that. but to be honest i am none the wiser as to what i actually want/need.

If im going to be honest, i want a camera that i can use very often, nothing for professional photography, just something to capture certain moments. I also go on safari almost every summer as i live in africa over the summers, so a camera that would be good enough to take wildlife pics, without zooming in so much that the picture blurrs (currently doing this on my current camera a samsung st50)

my budget is quite low as im a student...i could probably save up for a lens later on, but a camera with a good lens on it for a fairly low price is kind of what im looking for, but i have no idea what is right for me.

personally , i would consider the nikon 3100 or canon 550d. both are very good starter cameras , it will go down to how they feel when you hold it .
go to a good camera shop and ask to hold them , most will be willing to let you try them.

the 550d and d3100 are both aboout £479

Cheers Steve

Wow, thats actually way out of my budget, i guess im not gunna be able to get a decentish camera for around £200 or so am i ( body only)

Maybe a canon 20D and a 55-250 IS lens but you're looking around £200-250 for those.

If that's your budget then I'd be looking for a good secondhand camera like a Canon 350D, old but I still use mine and capable of some decent shots.

Go used, Canon 20d or 350d and decent zoom lens like 55-250mm or I use an old 70-210mm which is fantastic and can be had cheap on ebay. It's a hidden gem.

350d body used = £180
20d body used = £160

55-250mm used = £140
70-210mm used = £100

You should be able to get a secondhand entry level Nikon, Canon or Sony dslr, with the kit lens for that sort of money. Have a look at MPB Photographic, they're highly-regarded on here and a have a few Nikon and Canon cameras that are within your budget...

MPB Photographic currently have a nikon d70 for £130-£140. And then i assume almost any of the nikon lenes would fit on the camera?

Any Nikon lens that MPB have will work with that camera. Lenswise a Nikon 55-200 VR or 70-300 VR would be your best bet. Both would blow your budget (the 55-200 only by £50 or so though) but the investment would be worthwhile.

The D70 is fairly old although still an excellent camera, a D40, D40x or D60 would probably be better if you can stretch to one though.

i did not know your budget. i have a d70 and its a very good camera , it works with all my lens , the focus motor is in the body.
i have never owned a conon but have used them any there is very litltle difference between them.

cheers Steve

No need to apologise, i didnt put up my budget

My seventten year old son has the Nikon D3100, when I first got it for him I thought, ok for a beginner, then I tried it, the camera is superb, he has the Nikkor 28-300 Vr, however, but as cameras go it is VERY good, though I would suggest the first thing you add is a battery grip and YES the ones on Ebay for it are good, well made and worth every penny.

okay, i know this is a resurrection of my thread, but i had some personal issues that needed dealing with and ended up spending the money i had saved for a camera on that. and which is why i never replied for so long, however that is all dealt with and since is it my birthday on the 21st (this Saturday) and a lot of my family know i want a camera so some have already started giving me money for it, i thought i would come back and ask again as i know the people here were extremely helpful before

Im looking to buy a camera and a lens for around £350-£450.

ill most likely get alot more than that for the camera but im also saving up for a masters.

also are there any websites that give great tips for diy light boxes and such?
