Help on focus

Hi nearlly all my photo's from this location turned out like this, the cars were not travelling that fast here, focus seems to be on the spectators behind.
Shutter speed 1/400sec, f3.5, D300 camera set to dynamic area auto focus 21 point.
What went wrong ?

I would only use the center focus point.

Do you have the Nikon software - it shows which focus point was used for each shot.

Failing that, put it back in the camera and the screen should show you which focus point was used.

Difficult to say with such a small pic, but I guess you could have fired the shutter while it was focusing between the spectators and the car? If so, change your shooting menu so it will only shoot when focus is gained?

Had a look in veiw NX and all the one's that are in focus shows the focus point's all are on bonnet or grill, the one's that are oof do not show the focus point's.

If the focus points aren't showing, it would suggest you've released the shutter before the focus was acquired.

Not sure how the focus works on the nikons as I'm a canon owner, but mine won't take the shot unless it has focus when it's in an AF mode.
