Help on kit for Scilly Isles trip

Hi all

I'm going to the Scilly Isles next week - never been before and not sure on kit to take. Can't take too much stuff given weight restrictions on ferry.

I was thinking I might take the 70-200 + 2x in case of interesting wildlife, but wondered if the 100mm Zeiss Makro might be more useful. Also struggling between 17-40 & 35L or even the Fuji X100. I'll be taking snaps of the family as well as landscapes / nature shots / anything else worth snapping!

Anyway - here's my available kit - anyone got any suggestions please?

I'll take a carbon fibre tripod & 580EXII flash.
 
Personally I'd probably take the X100 and enjoy the time with family rather than togging. If I were to take a DSLR I'd take the full frame, 17-40, 50mm and 70-200.

Thanks! I might well take the X100 and 1 DSLR - Would you advise the 2x converter? Is there much in the way of birds / seals etc to snap?

Scilly is famously birdy, especially this time of year with the migrants passing through.

Just curious - what kind of weight restrictions are there on the ferry? I've not heard of any before.

Here's a quote from their website:

All passenger luggage is loaded by hand into containers for the voyage, so please do not use excessively large or difficult to handle cases or bags.
No single piece of luggage should exceed 20 kilos. Excess luggage is charged at £3 per kilo.

I haven't been to the Scilly Isles since the 1987 hurricane (that was a crazy experience for a 9 year old!) so my memory is a little hazy but yes birds, especially on Tresco where I remember a Golden Pheasant and maybe even a Lady Amherst Pheasant too, of course those very one's wont be there but they may still keep them. Also, Tresco has it's own micro-climate which means lots of cool butterflies and other cool birds too.

Then there are the cliffs and seascapes which you'll probably want the wide angle for and also the gig racing (I think they still do that?) which the 70-200 would be perfect for.

I guess if weight is an issue you could leave the 50mm but then they weigh so little...

There is NO luggage allowance for Day Trip passengers.
All luggage must be clearly labelled with name, holiday address and the ISLAND to which you are travelling, or your mainland address on the return journey.
On your outward journey to the Isles of Scilly all clearly labelled St. Mary's luggage will be delivered to your holiday accommodation for a small charge by local haulage firms: Island Carriers (01720 422662) or Richard Hand Haulage (01720 423007).
If staying on an off-island it is important to ensure that luggage destined for St. Martin’s, Bryher, Tresco or St. Agnes is correctly labelled as it will be automatically loaded onto the appropriate onward launch on arrival at St. mary's Quay. Off-island labels are available at Penzance Quay.
If you prefer to collect your luggage in person at St. Mary's Quay, please indicate this on your luggage labels, or refrain from indicating your island accommodation.
Hand Luggage

Hand luggage amount is unrestricted, although hard case items do need to loaded into the luggage containers and will be refused at check-in.

Freight

The following items are all classed as FREIGHT and must be booked and paid in advance:

Windsurfers
Camping Equipment
Bicycles
Boats
Diving Equipment
Motorized Wheelchairs
Trailers (under 2m only for St. Agnes and St. Martins).
Charges and luggage are for transport by the Steamship Group to St. Mary's quay only. Please ask our Travel Centre for advice about freight well in advance: 0845 710 5555.
