Sorry if this question has already been asked....

My question is, as I already own a Nikon D700 and now I'm looking for a lens for my Landscape photography, to take it to the next level.

Q1, Would you buy a........ Nikon 24-70mm f2.8G or Zeiss Distagon T* 21mm f2.8 ZF2 Lens. to suit my D700 ?
Q2, Or would you upgrade to a D800 as I believe is fantastic and very close to a medium format again what lens would you chose to suit ?

All your input, plus your time to explain my questions, is very much appreciated, on helping me decide what would be best.

for landscapes I'd go for the D800E and a 14-24mm - filter options are possible but expensive but if you're putting the money into a good body and lens then it makes no sense to cut corners on things like filters and tripods
 
Hi Ian, I have just gone from D700 to D800 and have 24-70mm great combo indeed when shooting Landscapes.

If you dont have the budget to get D800+24-70 straight away IMO I would get the lens you want first and when you have decided what you want that is, the D700 which you already have is a fantastic camera, I'm going to buy another one as soon as the bank balance lets me know I can, it never missed a beat when out on the hills in all conditions and also produced lovely images with 24-70

Thank you all for your advice. :)

I have been offered a 24-70 f2.8 lens by a good friend who has had very good Landscape results. but he is changing back to Canon.
However before he had mentioned it to me, I was looking into the Zeiss Lens with its sharp report. As you can see why I'm scratching my head. :thinking:

Kevin Thank you for your input too, and yes I like my D700 very much.... but maybe a D800 its a way forward for me to keep improving, reports say its a excellent camera and in a class on its own.

Hi Kevin, I will have Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 plus Nikon 50mm 1.8 Nikon 70-200mm 2.8.
 
Keep the d700, and spend on glass.
Loving my sigma 35 f1.4 art. Super sharp and great contrast. Really don't see the need to trade up to a d800. Never print bigger than A3.
The d700 does mores than I need.

Kevin, Yes I have Lee filter & Hitech pro 10 stopper.


Robert, thanks for your input.. I do print at A3 and only the odd A2

Its not that I'm trying to keep up I have 2.5k to spend, I have a D700 and I what to improve my Landscapes. I'm looking to spend it sensibly and to last a long time.
( I know!..... I'm asking for the earth ). :)

No one has mentioned the Nikkor 16-35 f4. At £850 it is £400 cheaper than a 14-24 f2.8. I use it on my D3 and D600 with good results. I think the are a couple for sale on this site at the moment.
Also the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 is a very good lens on my D300 but is a DX lens so not suitable for full frame cameras.

Can I ask where you have been looking to purchase your new camera fron John ?as that can make a difference are you buying new or secondhand etc.

Well, the Sigma 10-20 is a DC lens so only gives full coverage on a crop sensor - not ideal for the D800. Not sure it's up to doing the D800 justice when the camera's in crop mode either TBH. The 50mm and the 70-200 f/2.8 are FF lenses though.

Personally, I would (and did) stick with the D700 (I did have a D800 as well but sold it on) and get the best lenses you can afford for it. D800 images can be cropped in to more than D700 ones can but you'll need very good lenses to get the sharpness you'll want to do the cropping.

Hi jack Flash Thanks for your input and I agree with you Sigma 10-20 is a very good lens but not for FF. I have sold it to a mate who has a D300.

Ok I think my decision is I will stay with my D700 buy 24-70 f2.8 off my mate as it's 6 mths old (I don't know why he is going back to Canon):thinking: give this a go first and see where I'm going....

I would go the sigma dp1 and dp3...I had the Nikon d800e and zeiss lenses ..also had canon ...for pure image quality nothing can touch the sigmas..that's a fact..if your an experienced photographer and you want pure quality sigma..if you still want the d800e your tech has to be very good..the Nikon 14 24mm is good but since ive been using the sigmas no lens out there looks even slightly good to me ...canon hopefully will change the game if they introduce a foveon type sensor but as allways you will pay a premium ...the sigma cameras are cheap at the moment and yes they are fiddly and battery life is poor ,but I just love the output...everytime I go out and come back and put the files though the computer I allways get that wow factor ...if your serious about landscape the dp3 with a good head can do pan landscapes that are just amazing
