Just tried a grip on my 40D that I bought from here, now my camera won't work

Took the door off, inserted the grip, tried to use it and got error 99. Now my camera won't work without the grip or with it.

Was functioning perfectly well before I tried the grip, no power there at all now, nothing

Not happy obviously and not sure what to do next, never had this happen before

Also the on/off wasn't working on the grip, but can't see that would matter too much or would it?

Any help gratefully received, thanks

Have you tried removing both batteries (including the little button cell), leaving for 5 minutes, then putting the batteries back in? That should completely reset the camera.
 
Have removed the battery, but forgot the small date/time cell

Still dead as a dodo, fully charged Canon battery too

Really quite cheesed off and not sure what to do apart from send it off to Canon
 
Make sure the grip is screwed in tightly to the base of the camera.
 
Took the grip off and doesn't work without it, all fine until I attached that bloody grip, it must have messed something up.

Never had a problem with this camera ever until now

Did you put the battery lid back on correctly? Sounds odd. I have a third party grip on my two cameras (40D & 5DII) no issues (apart cfrom the 5D wheel going the opposite way from the norm)!
 
Thanks to you both for your suggestions

Have made some enquiries and seems that for some reason it has probably blown the DC-DC Board which apparently is like blowing a fuse.
Just one of those things, not sure if the not working on/off switch had anything to do with it, but assuming it sent a bit more current in than was required

Off to Canon it goes tomorrow, just what I didn't want before Christmas

Did you attach the grip with the batteries in it?

Presumably the on/off switch is stuck on so if the contacts touched the wrong bit of the camera as the grip was being put on it would be live and cause a short circuit?

Just a guess though.
 
Expensive repair? I think Canon have a fixed price repair cost for this at just over £100!

That's my guess too Mike and yes the batteries were in, but the switch was at off. Might give it a go and send the grip back with the camera and see if I can blame a faulty Canon product or at least appeal to their festive spirit

All done now, microwave packed up Tuesday and just had the new one delivered today, not been a very cheap week.

Must also add how good the seller was with this problem, instant refund and insisted on a bit extra too which was a lovely gesture

Camera sent off to Canon at Elstree this morning on a non guaranteed RMSD

Received by Canon at Elstree and they have quoted the fixed fee of £153

So still not sure what happened, but looks like it will be sorted out ok

Not sure if you get a service and sensor clean for that price, anyone know please

Yes they should clean the sensor (they did when an old 350D I had went in for a repair to the CF Slot).
 
No worries. THe engineers should have told you that.
 
Camera arrived back today and it was indeed the DC-DC unit that needed replacement

Excellent service especially with it being the festive season
