Ok, a the moment i use a Manfrotto 680B monopod for all sports, this works ok but isnt great for long periods (1DMKIII and 400 f/2.8). I have a Manfrotto 055XB tripod and this simply cant handle the weight and the legs aren't sturdy enough. Does anyone know of a good tripod and head combo that would be sturdy enough for me to be able to leave my kit setup without fear of it falling over, I want to be able to pan with this setup and Budget isn't to much of an issue.

Apologies if this question has been asked before.

Many Thanks

Andy

Like Andrew said. I'm at a race circuit most weekends, and I do not know anyone that uses a tripod for motorsport photography.

One of the biggest reasons for not using a tripod at such events is that it simply gets in the way and in fact could be a safety issue (for you, people around you and even competitors depending on the sport).

I use a 500mm prime with a 1D mk II on a Manfrotto 681 monopod with no issue whatsoever, and can be shooting for up to 10hrs at a time.

To be honest, in my experience, I don't think that tripods are used for many (if any) field sports either. Some may use them for things like surfing, but for football, rugby etc etc I doubt you'll find anyone using a tripod.

use my mono for footy rugby etc, but not great for cricket, especially the longer forms of the game.

Thanks anyways guys :-)

About 3 weeks ago at Mallory one of the circuit photographers was seen with a 1D3 100-400L hanging off a Velbon tripod. I told him he was in a minority! He said he'd only been doing it a couple of months and 'it worked for him'
