Help please with two laptops on the same wireless network - now sorted

My other half and me each have a laptop running Vista. On many occasions, one or the other laptop has problems connecting to our wireless network if the other laptop is already connected to the network.

A warning dialog box comes up with "another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer"

Please can someone give some guidance on how to change any necessary setup or network settings to help solve this problem.

Do you have the network set to Obtain IP automatically or do you have a static IP address set?

If its set to Obtain IP automatically you shouldn't have a problem.

If you have set a static IP you may have set the IP the same on Both Machines so you will need to change one of them.

Is your wireless network secured?
Are you sure that you are connecting to your own wireless network?

Does your router give reserved dynamic addresses?
 
To be quite honest if you switch everything off and then on again the router should assign a new IP address to all connections!

it is secured by WPA2-PSK

Here's the blurb about addresses

Use Router As DHCP Server
The DG834GT Router is set up by default as a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Server, which provides the TCP/IP configuration for the all the computers that are connected to the Router.

Unless told to change these settings by your ISP, leave the Use Router As DHCP Server check box checked.

If your ISP has you clear this check box, you must have another DHCP server within your network or else you must manually configure the computer.

Starting IP Address: This box specifies the first of the contiguous addresses in the IP address pool. 192.168.0.2 is the default start address.
Ending IP Address: This box specifies the last of the contiguous addresses in the IP address pool. 192.168.0.254 is the default ending address.
 
Do you fully shut the laptops down after use, or do you hibernate them? If you use the hibernate function you will find that the allocated IP address is retained. This means that if the other machine is booted from cold it will potentially pick up the same allocated address.

A quick way to solve the problem without rebooting, when you get the message, is to go to the command prompt Start -> Run -> Cmd

then type ipconfig /release and press the enter key, followed by
ipconfig /renew and press enter.

This will force a network adaper reset.
