Hi guys ill keep this brief after being insulted and more on another photography forum for having to long a post ? (i would of thought as i did by giving as much info as possible regarding the topic of the thread should in reality bring the best results...

Ok im new to photography other than the usual simple family type cameras so i know very, very little but due to a recent house move to a spectacular area of senic Scotland i have had my interest buds wiggled and i would like to know more and most importantly in my situation what (without spending fortunes i hope would suit me best) i have an MS type muscle wasting desease, i have eyesight and walking difficulties and more so the type and useage of any new devise is imperative what i envisage is a piece of equipment that can with at least passable images handle landscapes close/far, portraits and the usual family related day to day stuff, but possibly more importantly due to having not a lot of feeling in my hands i need something that essentially can run set and fix/sort its own settings to ensure light/dark, flash/not etc that is not to heavy so i can wear it around my neck sitting on standby ready to use at a moments notice maybe that doesnt eat batteries would be good, am i asking to much or does this devise exist or close to it and if so where and how much?

I would love to hear from anyone who can offer any advice or personal recomendation i will of course respond to all replies.

Many thanks for your time...

Hi and welcome to TP.

From the description you have given I would guess that a Bridge camera would probably suit your needs best. Not as expensive as a DSLR but better than the average point and shoot compact camera.

I can't offer any personal recommendations regarding models but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to offer advise from a personal experience.

Good luck in your new hobby, your surroundings sound great.

Paul.

Paul thanks for that, confirming my thoughts not sure if im on the right track but Argos was selling at half price a Nikon L120 a 14MP model at a little over £120 which sounded quite good, was affordable and certainly the customer comments on Argos site were 90% good but i never fully trust such sites comments it will be intresting to see whats suggested though ( sadly they are not suprisingly out of stock and dont seem to know if they will be getting any more) it is available on Play.com im led to believe but the L110 model for £179 so maybe someone with one of these or a similar model might care to comment

Hi,

I am no expert and there are more qualified people on here to answer but I would agree with Paul in that a bridge camera is probably best.

I just bought one myself as my partner and me to some extent was getting a bit frustrated with the space and hassle of the large and heavy dslr I had along with extra lenses whenever we went away.

I bought the canon sx40 and whilst I have not been out and used it much yet, I have seen plenty of very good shots taken with it. Great zoom, hd video, very light and controls seem well placed. The only bad points I can say is that up close you can't get fantastic narrow depth of field ( learnt that one here) and the screen is not as high end as some of the other models out there but find it ok. Overall very pleased.

What I would say is because of your hands and the other points you make it would really be worth while you heading to jessops or other local store and having a play see how it fits in hands weight etc.

Good luck with whatever you choose to buy, and hopefully we will see ore of you and your pics on the forums ;)

Ian - Many thanks good valid points some i had thought about i will do so as soon as practical to travel however with our nearest suitable store around 140-150 miles away it will have to wait untill the weather cheers up a bit added to i worry that whilst even in Asda i can feel, play and hold i doubt they would put several models on to see how easy they are to operate ? maybe they will im assuming of course based on other things ive purchased hence my wishing personal experiences like your own ....

Many Thanks

Welcome Dougie,

I have a nikon P500 which is very light and i am really pleased with the photos it produces, it has quite a few scene modes which are easily accessible and suit most situations, it also has an amazing zoom 36x. This may be worth a look if you can get to a camera dealer, you really need to have a play with several different models to see what feels comfortable, and see how easy the controls are.

A lot of people run bridge camera down and I'd have agreed with them if I still had the Fuji bridge that was my first digital camera, it was awful :D but things have moved on. My sister has recently bought a Panasonic (not sure of the model number) and it's a relative joy to use with a clear EVF and image stabilisation. It's really light too and very possibly lighter than my G1+lens.

I'd say that a bridge makes sense and that a visit to your local dealer should give you several to choose from. if you'd like something even smaller and lighter you could take a look at the Panasonic LX5... they're so good that Leica rebadge them :)

Welcome to TP

As you have mentioned you have mobility problems a heavy DSLR would be out of the question I would think. Therefore maybe a compact camera may be the answer which do produce excellent pictures. If I may suggest that if you can get to Curry's or similar outlet, go and have a look and see what would suit, my local Curry's have a large range of all types/makes and compact will cover the range of photography your considering. Generally compact cameras are cheaper with excellent magnification if required, as for make well there is such a huge choice its impossible to pick out any one over another, but what may matter more for you is how easy it would be to use the buttons and getting to the menu to alter settings should you wish although leaving on auto will cover almost anything you want to take photos of.

My wife has one, a Canon compact and gives good results, if I were you I would seriously consider a camera thats easy to use even in the future. If there is a good local camera club near you that would be another place to seek advise.

Check out prices makes of compacts on this link and there is a huge choice as well as other types just follow - view - after prices for more details from shops

Hello and welcome,

I just brought this for my step son for xmas and had a little play with it just to make sure it was working of course and was quiet impressed with it.
Outside was good, Controls were easy to use, The only niggle i have is with the battery compartment and where the sd card goes it can be a bit fiddly.

It is light weight and fits in the hand nice. The 720 Video is quite good aswell.

I just checked the argos website every night to be honest and most stores had them in every night.

Hope this helps some what
