I have a problem with my Tokina, it locks up and I get 'Err 01 communications between the camera and lens is faulty. clean the lens contacts'. After much testing I have narrowed it down to only at 12 to 15mm and smaller than f5 that it has a fault. It works fine through the whole aperture range at 24mm but when at 12mm I can't use past f5.

There could be faulty wiring somewhere inside. The best plan is to send it in for servicing

I had a similar problem with a 24-105 and it turned out to be the aperture unit. This has a ribbon cable and the consistant flexing caused by zooming in and out damaged the cable.
I don't think you habe much choice but have it serviced.
