When I logged in this morning my screen had reset itself to low-res all the icons & text were large. Sometimes happens if there's been a power glitch, usually I restart, but this time I decided to reset the screen resolution back to 1600*1200 for my 20" monitor. Now everything is out of proportion, everything is stretched sideways. I've tried all the modes, but nothing works. Did have the proportions right at one time but text was almost unreadable even with clear type adjustments. Running Windows 7 64bit. Anyone had similar problems that they managed to resolve. Updated the video card drivers as well, did a system restore from when it was okay, but doesn't restore the screen settings as far as I can see. Help
 
Yep, it's the one it reverts to if I use 'Detect' in the screen resolution part of control panel, and I'm pretty sure it's the one it's always used. It's the only one that gives me the properly sized icons on the desktop, but now they are also stretched as well. I really hate computers when they do things like this.
 
It shows the monitor as Generic non pnp, but when I was setting it up initially I'm sure it was pnp. At least if you unplugged the monitor cable or reconnected it the computer would beep as if it was recognising hardware being added, doesn't do it now though (had to do this as only one monitor while trying to get stuff off my old xp)
 
Is it a widescreen monitor - if so 1600x 1200 would be wrong.
 
Monitor is DGM L-2041W. Looks like there is a problem with the generic non pnp modes. Going to boot in safe mode and see what is going on.
 
Cheers Paul, how do I set it to 1680x1050 when the max shown in control panel is 1600x1200.
 
Anyone know how I get it back to plug n play, instead of generic non pnp.
 
Finally got something working, still non PnP but at least it's working. Using the 'Advanced Setting' within 'Screen Resolution' then 'List all Modes' in the adapter tab can now see all the resolutions. Another wasted day with computer problems.
 
Don't know if this helps, may be worth a try.
My monitor is a 20" widescreen is 1440x900 native.
Give that res a go and see if it works.
 
Download and install a monitor .inf file from your monitor makers website. System may give you the right options then if something is wrong with detecting what it is.

Thanks for the help guys, still have to choose the resolution from the adapter tab, but at least it's working. Just wondering if it was a problem with automatic updates loading a new set of drivers for the graphics card. Anyway I'm not wasting any more time on it. Cheers
