Yes
I need to take my UV filter off a lens 18-200 Nikon, I bought a set of filter wrenches but they will not budge the filter, the wrench set I purchased is this one:

They are not very good for the job, very flimsy, if anyone could point me in the right direction of a better set or any tips, I would appreciate it very much, thanks in advance.

rubber glove on 1 hand lens in other
press lens onto gloved hand & turn ,usually works..

Thanks I tried that before I bought the wrench set, shredded the glove, filter did not budge. This is one stuck filter :bang:

What daftbugga said, hasn't failed me yet. I don't use the rubber glove though.

stand front of the lens on a bag of icecubes frozen peas etc for 10 minutes and try again ,sometimes helps.

Hammer, pair of stiltsons and don`t use filters no more.

Except CPL`s.......:naughty:

Thanks everyone for the tips and for the links to the other thread, sorry, I should have searched first, I will try these and the tips in the other threads, wish me luck.

With some filters, it's possible to unscrew (or unclip) the retaining ring to remove the glass. That'll leave the front element of the lens exposed BUT it'll also remove the risk of the filter shattering and scratching that front element!

I tried a few of the methods described without success, then tried one of those rubberised mats designed to aid getting the tops off jars - worked a treat and didnt shred like the marigolds. I carry one in my bag now too.

Excellent idea, I will see if I can get one tomorrow.

An elastic band wrapped tightly around the filter has worked for me before now...

Most of my UV filters have got knurled sides which would allow the filter wrench to work fine, however this particular UV filter a Hoya Pro 1 has smooth sides so nothing to grip, the rim top does have a ridged edge so I suspect the mattress or rubber mat thingy might do the trick. I think in future I will make sure that all the UV filters I buy have knurled sides as well, live and learn :bonk:

If I cannot get a jar mat I will get hold of a cheap mouse mat and try that, thanks. The mouse mats I use at the moment are those very thin digital jobs for precision mouse movement.

Bolster Chisel and a 6lb lump hammer?

i forgot to say but if :nuts:you get filter off, before replacing it run the tip of a soft pencil around the thread it can reduce the chance of it getting stuck again.

I have a solution, might be pretty tricky though:

CHUCH NORRIS!
just get him to stare at the filter, it will screw itself off.:lol::lol::lol::lol:

though on a more serious note, put the lens and filter into a rather hot place (but not humid!) basically warm up the entire lens (not too hot to damage it). This sometimes helps because of metal expanding. then quickly use the rubber-glove technique!

The trick is in NOT distorting the filter as you try to unscrew it. This is going to sound daft, but it's worked before...

Have a look at the spare wheel in your car, press the filter onto the side of the tyre (with the wheel flat of course) and turn the lens gently. With a bit of luck the filter will unscrew. I can't promise it'll work but it's certainly worth a try. The theory is that your turning the filter but without any pressure to the side of it so no distortion.

Hope it helps anyway.

cheers
Bill

Is this any relation to CHUCK NORRIS? Texas Ranger & all that?

I have a photographic memory that was never developed

Try doing it as gently as you can ,had one stick with me once ,tried brute force and ignorance nae joy, and i'm not a wee chap by any means, had another look all it took was a gentle twist with my finger tips.As previous posts have said he filter ring will distort

Cool the whole lens, then warm the filter against a radiator or something.

Never tried it, but it might help. :)

t'other way round, you want the lens to "expand" and the filter to "contract"
as most filters screw inside the lens!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the suggestions, I eventually tried the rubber mat treatment, I found an old rubber car mat and it worked a treat, after all the huffing, puffing and cussing with the wrench kit, it took all of 2 seconds using a rubber mat
