Emma - hi and welcome to TP

NONE of these comments are harsh ok ...?....:)

there has been endless threads about UV filters ...suggest you do a search through the forum

ok - why do you think you need a UV filter..?

1...to filter UV ?. - no - that's a throwback to film days
all modern digital sensors already have a built-in UV filter

2.. to provide some degree of protection for the front end of your lens ..?
so fit a "Protection" clear glass filter ....
BUT any glass in front of your technical designed lens WILL cause a degradation of the image...and here's where all the opinions start

cheap filters WILL causes problems - flares etc
expensive filters [Hoya HD series] to a much lesser extent
so some people only fit a protector in a hostile environment - car rally, sand etc
other dont, and rely on a lens hood, then replace the lens cap when finished

it's really up to you, but it's not as vital as you may think
AND lots will have completely different opinions..........

the front of my Sigma 17-70mm is rather exposed
I purchased a Marumi DHG Protector - cannot see any degradation and it gives me peace of mind.

no i didnt take any offence. i dont pretend to know anything about slr's i am a complete beginner i joined this forum to learn. i know from other forums on a different topic, some people get annoyed when questions are repeated and to be honest these people dont remember what its like to not know everything. i am grateful for the people out there who do help and hopefully one day i will learn so i can help others.

Hi emma and welcome :), the len's you mention both have a 58mm filter thread, hope this helps....

Andy....;)

I tend to leave 1 on, just as an extra assurance against scratches etc, I will say it's easier to remove it than realise you want to go the beach tomorrow but are worried about sand and haven't got 1.

I'd be tempted in your position to just buy 1, at least for now. See if you think the potential degredation of IQ is worth it, how much you use it, you can always buy a 2nd later on.

iv just bought a really cheap one, just for extra protection incase i need it. thank you everyone.

.Emma

for my part I suggest you get a 58mm Marumi DHG Protector

have a look ..."here"

the Marumi DHG, the Super DHG, or the Hoya HD which has very good reports

the Marumi DHG C.PL [polariser] has good reviews too

if it is "a really cheap one" the consensus I've seen here, is to remove it if you are shooting anywhere close to the angle of the sun, to prevent flares - and at night to prevent flares from bright light sources such as street lamps

il see what the cheap one is like, and get to grips with using my new canon 450d then look at getting some more expensive accesories

That's not a great idea Emma. Unless your lens is in danger of some kind of airborn debris (sea spray, sand, flying mud at a car rally - that sort of thing) then you're better off without a protection filter, especially a cheap one.

Pay no attention, even a sawn-off milk bottle is better than nothing - those that say different are wrong, wear satan's underpants and will BURN IN THE FIERY PITS OF HELL!!!! YE HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Welcome back Rob.......

I've been a UV/Protection filter user out of habit for years and was considering ditching them . However, after my last holiday (and despite the great care I exercised) the filter on my 24-105 has picked up a noticeable scratch.

No idea how it happened but it is there. If the filter wasn't there it would have been the front element. As you might expect, I've decided the filter stays put.
