Pentax Kx Digital SLR Camera (Twin Lens Kit 18-55mm and 55-300mm)
£489

CANON EOS 500D DIGITAL SLR CAMERA INCL 18 - 55 mm LENS
£480

Sony A550 Kit with 18-55mm lens
£440

Nikon D5000 12MP DSLR Digital Camera & 18-55 VR AF-S Lens Kit
£459

the pentax looks too good to be true 2 lenses for that price.surley must lack in some areas compared to the others....i just dont know

hopefully you guys and girls can help me on my way cheers

Have you been to a local store to handle the cameras? See which feels better in your hands, may help you decide? Imo its the most important thing.
All these cameras are highly capable, comes down to which brand you want to buy in to, with Canon and Nikon you have a much larger lens choice if you choose to upgrade or add lenses/flashes etc in the future. Worth thinking about.

to be honest i haven't no.something i will have to do this week.just want to get the best i can for my money as well because i read spec sheets and company's blab about sensor types etc and i haven't got a clue.i have also looked on dp review but that's just one mans opinion :bang: so frustrating cheers

Well I think 1st thing is to go and handle these cameras and see which feels best. To be honest all those cameras are great, I use Nikon because I love their lenses and there flash system is a class of its own!

But your needs maybe different! Go play with them! ;)

Every opinion you get here is just one man or one womans opinion.

so

Go to the shops and handle all the bodies from as many manufactureres as possible.

Remember all cameras can take good pictures, it si you that make them great!

Then buy the one that fits the following best

Is most comfortable to hold
Has the most intuitive menu/control layout
Fits your budget.

that's your camera

As above..........

One mans Canon is another mans poison so to speak........ and pretty much a £400 canon is a £400 Nikon is a £400 Pentax - will be slight variations as to specs but essentially similar products which will produce similar results........

Advantage of Nikon / Canon is very popular so an abundance of s/h kit about, but also more buyers to snap it up..........

Pentax have just released a few new models so expect some discounting on existing stuff.......... think K5 is now out or will be soon which appears to sit half way between the K-x and K7 (odd position to fill!) and the K-r replaces the K-x.........

+1 to everyone recommending to try them all out and pick the nicest fit in your hands.

None of those models have any real noticeable advantages over each other, they'll all take excellent photos (if you can take excellent photos with them).

The Nikon D90 is also worth serious consideration and has the benefit of the built-in AF motor unlike the cheaper D3000/3100/5000 models. They can be picked up in mint condition for about £490-520 (body only).

I have always been a 'canon man' but had the sad opportunity to sell all my gear and i used the gap in gear to look at the Nikon brand. I have now [this week] bought a Nikon D5000 with std 18-55mm Kit lens and I am really quite chuffed with it. The IQ is really good and the camera feels nice in my big chubby hands :D One thing I really like is the shutter. On all my canons that I owned the shutter would move the body slightly but this does not happen with the Nikon, it's as steady as a rock which will hopefully reduce camera shake.

Both the Canon or Nikon would be great! They are both supported but loads of lenses and other bits so you can't go wrong.
