I recently emailed a local gig promoter to try and gain a photo pass for a local music festival type thing (loads of gigs over multiple venues over a couple of days) After hearing nothing for a few weeks I'd forgotton all about it but I just got a message back asking if I could email him a Press Request. I haven't the foggiest what this means. Do I have to sort of state my details and where I plan to use the images?

It's the first time I've ever had anything like this.

Ah not heard of that one! Can't help with any advice - but am interested in the answer myself :)

I'd hazard a guess that this is to determine which media outlet has requested you cover the event.

I would think that a "press Request' could be downloaded for the event from their website, it's usually a standard form asking for personal details and contact info for the publication you are working for.

Nothing to download. I guess I could put together a template myself, run it past people here to see if it looks about right?

It's a letter from the newspaper/mag asking permission for you to attend the event on their behalf and take/supply them with pics for their publication.

This way only genuine press togs get access and they don't get plagued with peeps with cameras wanting free access for nothing in return.

You could try sending them a letter detailing previous coverage of this type and who it was for, glossing it up a bit of course!

Thank you. I managed to get in touch with a couple of lads I know who have had to do press requests in the past (they work on a Uni magazine) so they've been giving me the lowdown on the details to include.

I've actually started my own blog for gig reviews/photos etc. It's completely empty at the moment but that's what I'll be shooting for if I get a pass.

Could you share what your uni pals said? i am intrigued.

And depending on the band, i would doubt you will get a photopass for your new blog.

Sure. They said it's really only basic stuff. Full contact details. What I require (in this case a photo pass). What I will be using this for (in my case for publishing on my blog/Flickr) a bit of a covering letter so to speak. Nothing complex.

*It's a multitude of bands. Mostly local I think. I only know of 2 on the list (I'm not as familiar with local bands as I should be) and they are Nine Black Alps and Kid British.

I'll let you know how I get on. I've nothing to lose by trying :)

*Edit - Zildjian. It's Glasgow equivalent would probably be Hinterland.

Cheers

And good luck, its surprising, if your nice alot of the pr people are nice too and let you get in.

Just incase anyone was curious as to how I got on, I got a pass and will this weekend be snapping away to my hearts content. Really looking forward to it. I'll be sure to post some photos here next week.

:woot:

Congrats! Looking forward to seeing your shots!

In fact...wouldn't mind being there myself, now then...where's that link again?

Most gigs allow you the first 3 numbers in the pit...then you're out of there so the crowd can enjoy the show.

Work fast and get yourself organised before the first band come on stage.

Hehe...You'll have to do it next year. I'll be in Edinburgh then so you can shoot it for my blog ;)

I wish there were pits. All small venues (bars/clubs etc). Luckily I'm used to the 3 song rule so no worries there. Plus I don't plan to stay for full sets as I want to try and catch as many bands as possible.

I'm reeeeeeeally looking forward to it now, sadly I have a stinking cold at the moment but I'm sure shooting this will make me feel better.
