Hi im off on holiday friday and need to find a good lens to buy. Only have a jessops and a lce near me and i have about £400 to spend my camera 400D. Most of the pics i guess will be of the family so im guess i wont really need zoom so really a good walk about lens.

Thanks Dave but i dont have any money till friday so it will be a pop into town only have kits lens did have sigma 28-300

I pop into the southampton Lce they had Canon EF-S 18-200mm would u recommend that one

Seems to get reasonable reviews as a super zoom. have you thought about the 55-250 IS lens as you have the kit lens (presume in the 18-50 range)

Thanks guys i like the look of this one also Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC i really only want to take the 1 lens with me

Does you kit lens have IS? If not, upgrade that and then partner it with the very good EF-S 55-250.

EF-S 18-200 is a tempting choice for an all-in-one. It's a decent lens, and can be made even better if you shoot Raw and run the files through the Canon DPP image correction software (if you didn't know, you got it with the camera - upgrade it with a free internet download). It instantly corrects CA, distortion and vignetting :) This feature is unique to Canon's post processing, but it is only programmed with Canon lens correction data. DPP really makes lenses like this viable.

Edit: new kit lens is much better optically than the older version, as well as having IS.

The 50mm f/1.8 II is a superb portrait lens and very cheap at £70. Next up you have a 50mm f/1.4 which is closer to £280.

The 18-200mm is a good 'non-hassle' lens and should cover a most things you need to shoot.
