Help! What to buy first?

I have got a Nikon D40x and love it. Got a bag and tripod, but am now looking to get one of the following:

SB600
50mm 1.8 Prime Lens
70-300mm 5.6 Lens

Budget is about £180 and not really sure which to buy first. I like to photgraph everything from portraits, to sports, to animals, landscapes and macro!! I enjoy them all.

Which would enhance my photo's with the most amount of impact? :shrug:

sigma 70-300mm apo - £110
and I don't know about a 50mm prime.
But I'm sure you could find one for around £60-£70

Difficult question to answer but I'll try. First you know that the 50mm will not auto focus on the D40x as it doesn't have a built in motor, so that might rule that out. The sb600 flash will be great for portraits compared to the on camera flash (assuming thats what you are using at the moment), can be used for the likes of macro work and also fill flash outdoors. For sports and nature you will need to go long so maybe something like the Sigma 70-300 APO will fit the bill, but I don't know if it will auto focus on the D40x.

Only Nikkors with AF-S and AF-I and Sigmas with HSM will auto focus on the D40 and D40x, there's a thread about lenses for it here somewhere.

I'd grab the 70-300 mm VR Nikkor, if you have the money.

SB-600 is the only one of those that will work properly with your camera.

The two lenses (unless you get the Nikkor AF-S VR version of the 70-300, but this exceeds your budget by about 100%!) will not autofocus on your camera I'm afraid.

You could look at the Nikkor AF-S 55-200 VR which is a great little lens.
