You need to work out your budget and needs and then get into a shop and handle them.
If you don't mind the bigger (than m4/3) lenses, Sony Nex looks good - especially the Nex7, which is expensive.
If you want to go smaller, the Panasonic G3 is a great camera. Smaller still, in the rangefinder-style cameras, it gets messy. The Olympus E-P3 looked the best on paper, but it's very expensive and I hated the menus. So I went for a GF2.
If buying again now, I'd have a good look at the GFx too.
There's also the Samsung NX system (larger sensor and lenses like the Nex), and the super-tiny Pentax Q and Nikon 1 series. Neither of the latter two appeal to me due to the loss of DoF control with such small sensors.

I got rid of my D300 for similar reasons to you. I stupidly listened to people telling me that f2.8 glass is the only stuff to use, but its so heavy and cumbersome. A day round Paris with that lot slung over my shoulder made me realise it all had to go, so I sold the lot and eventually ended up with a G2 and 14-45 + 45-200 lenses.
No, they aren't as good as a large DSLR with expensive lenses, but they aren't far off now.
I still like a lot of control over my camera so although mine has a touch screen, you can disable all but the handy functions and still have plenty of direct buttons to press. One reason i didn't upgrade to the G3 is that I couldn't get on with the screen and the camera was just too small for me. ( ok, thats 2)
Do as Llamaman says, go and look at them in a shop and see which are comfortable to use. Also, some of these system cameras don't have viewfinders, so that could have an influence on your final choice.

thats brilliant thanks budget is prob upto 1k when i sell my d90 18-200 lens ,macro lens and christmas birthday money (could even be more than that !!)
I looked at the j1 which is very quick and tiny but also the omylpus epl1 will have to go and have a play with the g series i hate making a descision !!
