Hey,

I have a pair of 10x42 binoculars and I was wondering what the equivelant lens would be on a 35mm format for the 10 times magnification?

Couldn't find the answer in google

Cheers,
Asa.

A couple of sites I found (in Google using search terms "telephoto lens magnification") worked on the premise that a 50mm lens = 1x magnification - on that premise, a 500mm will give 10x.

I'm not going to say that this answer is right or wrong.

Edit:

This site http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/technical/field_of_view.html has a FOV calculator. 10x42 binoculars have a FOV of 6.5° - according to the calculator, a 380mm lens with a crop factor of '1' will give a diagonal FOV of 6.5° (but 5.4° horizontal and 3.6° vertical)

Yes, 10x = 500mm lens. But it's not an exact science.

It's based on the general truth that a 50mm lens on a DSLR will present an approximately life-size image to the eye, ie 1x magnification.

This is approximately true for both full-frame and crop format cameras. Disregard the crop factor.
