help with buying an 85mm Nikon lens

I am looking at buying a lens around 85mm f2 ish, I have a D5000 with a kit 18-55, and Tamron 70-300, I need something to fill the gap but I need it fast as I shoot alot indoor.

Any sugestions welcome.:thinking:
 
Nikon have the 85mm in 1.8 and 1.4 models one around £300 the 1.4 £800.

Neither of these will AF on the D5000 which is not the end of the world but something to be aware of.
Nikon do a 35mm 1.8 with AF-S which is reasonably priced or for more money the 50mm 1.4 AF-S or Sigma 50mm 1.4 HSM
 
If you want it to autofocus I think you are stuffed as non of Nikons current line up are AFS and wont autofocus on a D5000. I think the 86mm 1.8 and 1.4 will meter though.
 
There is an AF-S 85mm f3.5 (but that is pretty standard apature and a heck of a price).

The nearest AF-S lens is the 105 f2.8 Macro, Cheaper than the 85 f1.4 but a lot more than the 85mm f1.8.

I used the 1.8 on a D5000 to take this picture manually focusing.

I think I moved after focusing on the nearest eye as it is just OOF, probably in focus on the nose. But the effect of such a small DOF is to die for... I really want this lens, but only when I have a D90 to make the most of it.

So what are your thoughts on the 18-105 vr lens 3.5-5.6? they say the vr is equivalent to 3 stops, it's the action shots of basketball im trying to get so the manual is ok for prefocusing, but on a burst mode when the player is moving fast, not much help I don't think. Has anyone got and used this lens?

HAHA guys, you really are a shallow lot! I don't really care whats on the badge, I want to capture an image. You can drag me kicking and screaming but it's a worthwhile hobby for me, not keeping up with the jones's lol :shrug:
 
I think it was the spelling he was referring to rather than the manufacturer! ;)
 
Problem you've got with VR is that although it allows you to handhold at several stops below normal, you still need the exposure (shutter speed) to freeze action like a basketball match and TBH, you'd be better off upping the ISO than relying on VR.

A good lens might be the AF-S 18-70mm: it's and f/3.5-4.5, has very quick AF and IQ is exceptional for a lens that you can get sued for about £130.

If you want faster apertures then the Tamron 17-50 or the 28-75 are a good choice because of the constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom.
