I hope u can help. I am shooting with a Nikon D5100 and I am wanting a new lens as the original one that came with the camera body won't zoom all that far. I don't want to be spending an arm and a leg on a lens. Also when using the lens I have got on my camera already, I'd I zoom in on a subject and I zoom in close it won't take the photo untill I zoom out a little bit. :-/ am not sure why. X

Ruth, lenses have a minimum focusing distance of usually a couple of feet so if you get too close they won't focus. Macro lenses are different as that's what they're designed to do.

You don't say what you shoot so it's hard to give advice, but if you just want to get greater distance for a budget price then the 55-200mm gets good press for it's abilities and value.

Also don't get confused by the word "Macro". Many lenses for sale use the word in their description but really mean they only focus at a shorter distance.

A true macro lens will display the subject full size i.e. a 1:1 reproduction, or greater.

Wookee means what subjects do you shoot.

Oh sorry. Well anything really. I like doing close up using the macro position on my camera. I have ordered a macro filter which is coming today so hopefully that will do the trick and I will try the lens he recommend too. X

That's amazing. Am going to get one of these I think. Thanks for ur help. X

Ruth, having realised now that it's macro you're interested in, and not bring distant subjects closer, ignore my earlier suggestion and go with Mark's. I have this very lens and find it very good for my occasional macro shots and it's definitely a good starter lens for this type of photography.

Awww thank u. I wasent too sure which lens to get, so I thought I would ask u guys as u all Jo better than me. Just didn't want to chance picking the wrong lens up x
