Help with my LCD screen

I am a relative newbie and I am having a problem with my canon 40d.

I just took it out to have a play and my LCD screen is really dark. I have lightened the screen through the menu but all the images are still really dark both when playing back or immediately after.

Any ideas- have obviously pressed something by mistake

Have you put it on manual mode?

Just to be sure, even the menu's are dark not jsut reviewing images? i know my screens are horrible in anything but indoors/shaded light
