i have just taken delivery of a nikkor 50mm 1.8 af d lens. it has an aperture lock on it that as far as i can see you have to use on every setting. what i want to know is do i have to use it on every setting on can i just turn it off and manually set my desired aperture without any warnings apearing in the viewfinder? many thanks for any help you can offer.

Put it on the highest number and lock it using the little tab.
You can then set the apeture using the camera.

Yep, on a modern body you have to lock it at the smallest setting (largest number) and control the aperture from the body rather than the aperture ring.

Bonus with having the aperture ring is that you can use it on an old film camera if ever you wanted to.

You'll know when the aperture ring isn't locked because you get and error on the LCD/viewfinder and the camera just locks up.....

....however, if you have the right camera (I know it works on my D2X) you can go into the menu setting and set it so you can use the aperture ring as opposed to the command wheel. What camera you using?

set your aperture ring to 22 (if thats the smallest aperture on your 50) on the lens and lock it with the little tab. Set the command dial to A (Aperture priority), as any other setting (apart from M) will mean that the camera automatically controls your f stop. The wheel on the back of the camera (where your right thumb is) should now alter the aperture you shoot at.
