Guys
I ordered the new Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens yesterday and I plan to use it on my Wimberley Gimbal Head............I emailed Really Right Stuff last night and asked them about the replacement foot that will work with this lens so that I can mount it on the Wimberley head and this is there reply;

Hello Neil,
While we know the LCF-17 foot can be mounted to that lens, we have not yet been able to test it ourselves to confirm that the foot offers the proper range of balance points to be considered compatible with all camera/lens combinations.
We hope to have that lens in house soon to perform those tests, and will either list the LCF-17 for that lens or develop a new foot if necessary.
Please feel free to check back soon for updates on that, or purchase the LCF-17 to test (please make note of our returns policy: http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/s.nl/c.3705077/it.I/id.52/.f).
Let me know if you have any other questions.

So my questions are
  1. Has anyone on this forum used this lens yet with this LCF-17 foot
  2. I guess the stock foot wont work/attach to either my Wimberley Gimbal or my RRS BH-55 ball head as they both have the Arca-Swiss quick-release system...................is that correct??
On another note I have also ordered a Nikon 80/400mm lens and have read about the crappy lens tripod mount that comes with this lens...........I see that RRS have a replacement collar and foot for that lens. LC-A13-Pkg: Lens collar and foot package Has anyone used that and if so how is it????

Thanks

Neil

I just saw this comment on the RRS website regarding the LCF-17 foot

The product is lighter than the Nikon plate for 600mm f4E FL VR, for this reason, it cause unbalance when fixing on Full Gimbal Head, but it is not a great problem. It is good!

I have that lens but have never used it on a tripod so didn't bother changing the collar - which is definately crap..... - but the reversed lens hood is just as bad a design.

Hi Guys,

I can't comment on the whether the lens is compatible with the RRS foot, but I can say for certain that the lens balances (with both D4s and D800e minus grip) on a Wimberley Gimbal Head with the Wimberley P50 plate attached.
Not sure if this helps in any way but I thought i'd let you know.

Regards

Matt
