Help with this walkabout lens please?

I have the canon 28 135 lens and love it as a walkabout lens.

It gives really good IQ over the kit lens i have 18 55 non IS.

To be fair though you can buy the same lens on ebay brand new for around the £230 mark.

I got mine second hand for £190

Shop around is my advice you can get it cheaper(most on ebay will say they come in a white box, donot let that put you off they are still new most likely come as part oif a kit lens, no different to the one you would buy from amazon

I used this lens on film & digital for years - great little bit of kit - good IS and good overall image quality. The 24-105 (3+ times the cost IS better, but not proportionally so.

Exactly what I thought - thanks. I'm hardly going to notice L glass quality on a 450D am I?

I'm sure your 450D would lap up a little L-glass, but the 28-135 is a great compromise if you'd rather not blow the cash for the 24-105.

Daug as i mentioned above 50 is too short to be a walkabout lens for me, even with the 18-55 i am often 'hitting' the 55 if you see what i mean. also if I was going to shoot anything below 28-ish I would likely be wearing the Sigma 10-20 anyway. As I take photos of trains as well it can help to have that extra on the end which I have recently realise.

Thanks for your time all the same .

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8? After that it is straight to the 70-200 series.

You'll notice a MASSIVE difference using L glass on a 450D, especially coming from the kit lens! Why wouldnt you? Its a very capable camera and benefits from L glass as much as a 5D would.

Not to put you off buying the 28-135 though, its a good piece of glass.

Having said that I've got hold of a new Canon 18-135 which you can get for similar prices and its a cracking lens. Great IQ across the range and better (as its Canon's latest version) IS. I was considering the 28-135 IS as I have the Canon 10-22, but I wanted my walkabout lens to still do reasonably wide stuff for versatility so I dont have to change lenses as I find I only break out the 10mm for specific shots.
