i getting stressed with my PC

i cact get any web pages displayed on IE... i can send/receive on outlook and get to my ftp site if i put it directly in my web browser address bar.

i know its the pc and not the connection as i am on my very old laptop via a wired connection plugged directly to the back of my BT home hub.

I am very tempted to re-install the machine i rather not as dont have some of the software anymore on disc etc...

PLEASE HELP!!!!!:help::help::help::help::help:

Does IE give any error messages?

I would just say use Firefox though, it is miles ahead of IE.

Try downloading Firefox (if you can) Its a very stable platform for browsing as it has a few less bugs in the programme compared to IE (in my opinion).

Hope that helps

hi all, the firewall is disabled and when looking at my internet gateway in network connections it showing as disabled and cannot re-enable
all i get is page cannot be displayed on IE

Will try and get firefox or similar installed but its only happened once i stared using the ftp and feel that has somehow been the default gateway!

please help!

I know this is a stupid reply but I assume the IE setting in 'File' hasn't been set to 'Off Line'?

firefox didnt work, its wasnt set to offline what else could it be!

firefox stating connection interupted.

BT ! mate its been a b****r all day (I am in same boat), switch the hub on/off then try again. BT do seem to have a prob at times with the weather (but will they admit it)?

i can access my email and my ftp from my pc!!!

sorry if that came accross brash, i am so ****ed off i am just venting!

I got my main PC downstairs , but the one in my office (on wifi) is playing up. Yup. its very annoying mate. I find wifi goes down if its: windy, cold or just for the hell of it ;)
I switch the Hub off , spit on a pic of Chris Marshall, turn the WiFi PC off then start again. Not much much help mate sorry. It is very annoying and costly at times.
cheers

Back to your problem... any chance you can post a few screenshots from it? Save them to a USB disk and post them if you can. I disagree with Firefox been better than IE7 but hey... I would working with Microsoft products... anyway... your problem... let's try and fix it!

update - i think i havea few viruse/spam/adware on my pc
i can load up the net now on both IE and firefox but everytime i do a google search adn click on the link it redirects the browser to shopping sites etc

I have run adaware (free version) and AVG anti virus (free version) problem is that for some reason i cannot d.load the updates for the definitions. Its almost asif something is playing with my firewall. first stopping web bnrowsing and now stopping definitions being updated!

perhaps a paid version of antivirus would help, but if it was me, i would save the hassle, transfer the content on the hard drive to a disk and reinstall, it will be far easier and should give the old laptop a healthy boost

It's my main pc, thats crippled at the moment. I dont have some of the install discs for some software :bang: which is why i have been trying to rescue it!

I have a backup drive that i use for my photos etc so wont lose anything really important

I thought about paid AV etc but will it make any difference if i cant download the definitions!

I need to make sure i have got my install disks now. :bonk:

the restore points seem corrupted too.
Right i am going to jsut get the disks and re-install! i am getting fed up of this now!
