Herstmonceux Castle is privately owned, also a university. I doubt you would be allowed to access the land without risk of being caught trespassing. unless you can get permission beforehand.
I did a sunrise shoot there years ago, but I knew a guy who use to work there and made special arrangements for a few of us.
i live not far from there. to see the place i think they have set opening days for the gardens.
Simon if you doing that kind of trip do go have a look at Scotney Castle you won't be disappointed. it has an old fortified house down in the valley and the main mansion above. One of the very few fortified houses in England if any left
I was there a couple of days ago and one of my favourite photographic places and now with the flowers out fantastic. Also have a boat house on the moat
