Hi their,
i have a pentax dslr and i am wanting to buy a new lens,
im thinking one of the Sigma EX DC ones,
i want it for night club shots.

What kind of Nightclub shots?
Gigs, people?

You wont go wrong with a Pentax 50mm f1.4
 
budget?

a fast prime sounds like what you need, if you'll be working in low light.
 
for nightclubs, a 50mm lens is far too long for the usual kind of 'group' shots, and the subjects will be (usually) flash lit anyway. A 2.8 zoom lens, eg the sigma or tamron 18/17 - 50mm 2.8 is a good choice, though an onboard ttl flash is more important than the lens for this kind of thing.
 
im looking to spend about 300 to 400 pounds,
and i want to snap crowd and djs
 
ps i want to be able to take close ups of people at clubs too and i heard that apertures around 1.4 f where better for that

close up - is all to do with

a) the distance between the front of your glass and the subject

and

b) the focal length of your lens.......

The aperture (smaller number the wider) will help to "separate" the subject from the background (subject in focus, and background out of focus.....)

Aperture helps with the Depth of field. (The parts in focus).... the trouble is once you are looking at f1.4 and are fairly close to the subject (say 1 metre away) your DOF is approx 2cm - so if the subject is not square on, you will have one eye in focus, and the other eye out of focus.........

both the tamron and sigma are very good. Buy whichever you like really lol. Sigma's probably marginally better built, but I haven't broken my tamron yet, and it earns me a living, and doesn't get the easiest life ever ;)
 
Well if you are looking in the 17-50mm range then the obvious choice is the Pentax DA* 16-50mm f2.8. Superb bit of kit and has the added bonus of being weather resistant so when someone chucks a drink at you in the club at least the lens will be ok :lol:
