Hi there, I need a camera

A friend of mine recommended this forum when I asked him about buying a (used) camera, but I thought I'd introduce myself before diving into the classifieds.

My six year old 300D has finally died, the mirror has come away from its frame. Canon quoted £153 to repair it but as it's far from mint condition, I think this is probably more than it's worth.

So I'm on the lookout for some new kit, probably a 40D/50D. I don't have a huge investment in glass though, so am open to non-canon options, I'm sure you're all full opinions!

the 40d is a bargin second hand i think . there is one on here for about 400 odd £ and about 700 shutter count im well chuffed with myne . dont go to cheep on lenses [you will allways wont better]

Indeed second hand is the way I will go. I am still trying to get my head around whether I would prefer the 40D or 50D.

I'm sure I would be delighted with either as they are both a significant upgrade from the 300D. I prefer the lower resolution of the 40D, but I like the idea of a better rear LCD. And newer is always better right?!

Although having had my current camera's shutter fail, perhaps a low actuation count is most important.

The second hand prices seem quite similar between the two, so I'm just going to keep my eye out for the right one. Anyone selling in South Wales?

To interpret the above member: I feel the 40D is a steal second hand-there is one to purchase here at around £400 give or take. I am mightly pleased with my purchase and don't forget to spend well on your choice of lens as knowledge increases the lure of 2.8 glass always beckons!

Just out of interest, how many shutter actuations did your 300D last for? I've heard that the top Canon range (xD range) should last well over 100,000 so it may be less of a consideration if you're upgrading to a prosumer model anyway.

Indeed, I've been looking round the site for the last couple of days and it has rather rekindled a suppressed desire for L-series lenses

It took something approaching 20K, its hard to know for sure as its had many CF cards over the years, some of which have been used in other cameras. But its well travelled and taken a few knocks. I'm sure a better cared for example would have lasted longer. This is partly why I'm interested in a more robust model.
