Technically a good photo to me but im not a fan of the material, it just looks boring and bland. That edit above is a vast improvement though.

It's just a little curves tweak and some selective saturation and desaturation on certain colours.

No worries, Phil. It really is just a case of practicing and reading some good turorials. Especially learn about how to use curves and selective saturation.
