High-end bridge cameras: Sony RX10, Panasonic FZ1000 etc

While out on a walkabout I found these "Spring Buds" growing in a hedgerow. I’m not sure what they are but I figured they were worth a Snap.

Nice to see you back contributing to the thread George - thought you had abandoned us!

No Mike, I've had to be using just my iPhone for virtually all of my photography over recent times as I was very ill around the fall last year that has left me lacking in strength that still hasn't returned, so the iPhone is the only thing photographically I could manage to carry about.

I've bought a set of trolly wheels now that enable me to take a small camera bag out provided it's not to far to walk from my car, so I've been giving it a try by taking out my RX100M6 or my RX10M4. Things like static subjects should be ok but any thing like my street snaps I'll still have to hobble around with my iPhone though so they won't be posted on this thread.

I'll try to post as many pic's as I can on this thread but it still won't be as much as I would like to post. I'll just have to see how it goes.

Many thanks for asking that's very kind of you.

Ah I see, sorry to hear about the health issues George but it's good that you are back out and about now and taking photos. Wishing you all the best in your recovery and look forward to seeing more shots if circumstances allow :)

It wasn't until I looked at this on my laptop that I noticed the little lizard/snake (?) (ETA - A slow worm I believe!) under the butterfly - she appears to be licking the back of his head! :$

Painted Lady with little friend by Mike Smith, on Flickr

"Excellent" macro/close up style capture Mike, it's lovely when something like that shows up on a computer that wasn't noticed at the time of taking, on this occasion it helps to make the pic' even more interesting.

"Further to our conversation of yesterday, I've been messing about in my garden recently trying to snap something half decent with my RX units. I've managed to get a few reasonable macro/close up style pic's (not up to your standard) mainly with my RX10M4 and the macro converter that I had made. When I post them I'll probably need a bit of help identifying most of them as I haven't a clue other than calling them Bug, Spider, Fly etc"

Thanks George!

Looking forward to seeing what you can get :)

It's like finally getting a date with your dream girl and then finding out she's actually quite boring

RX10IV was pretty close to perfect apart from few niggles like not the latest AF from Sony, uhs-ii card support, smaller battery etc

This would bring it in line with latest alpha bodies which I own. So personally I'm really looking forward to this update.

My expectations were probably too high but I thought they would at least have come up with a revised sensor potentially with better noise performance or similar? Anyway you're right enough and I will probably buy one (unless they give me one for 10 years of free advertising since I started this thread!)

She's only boring if you have already experienced her older sister ;)

As a matter of interest what would you like to have seen on the new Sony?

It’s a fair question as for me it’s a good compromise already (the folk on Facebook who wanted the new one to have an apsc sized sensor seemingly having no idea that this would necessitate a completely different and massively bigger camera  )

However - primarily a new sensor would be good (with better noise performance), personally I would have liked it if it could focus a bit closer for macro (maybe not possible, don’t know), maybe a better viewfinder. The killer feature would have been more reach on the lens even if it meant the camera being a bit bigger but maybe that will come with the Mk vi

A massively bigger camera with a massively bigger price tag too.

The macro focus on my Leicasonic V-LUX 114 is a big disappointment and, as you say, a bit closer would be helpful. But I thought the Sony already had those aspects nailed on.

perhaps they've improved the lens especially to keep up with new AF
I still don't expect to see a new sensor, might get 1/2 stop improvement in ISO and dynamic range from new processor etc

anyway not long now... we'll see

The rumour guy seems more interested in talking about the new FX body instead.
kinda makes me wonder if there isn't anything ground breaking for him to drive clicks

Since it's my birthday later this week, I might have to buy myself a v as a self gift! My iii's rubber is peeling and it has misbehaved slightly a couple of times (possibly a battery issue) so could do with replacing and even 2nd hand ivs are getting on a bit as well as being "not cheap"!

Rumours guy thinks it still has the same lens and sensor despite the picture from the teaser

I know some people here will be disappointed with specs, but having used Sony bodies from 2017, I can tell difference in AF capabilities is night and day.

TFS - keeping the same lens would make more sense, I can't think why they would have decreased the range slightly at either end. If they had given the lens more reach I would probably be moaning about the fact it was bigger and heavier  . In all honesty I'm just happy they are breathing a bit of life into this little niche as it suits me just fine as a casual tog who still wants some decent results.

As I've almost certainly said before, FOR ME, the advantage of the RX-10 over any systems is the size. The thing is smaller than even an X-T1 with the 18-135, with the extra reach over that as well. Yes, there are slight compromises, especially since I shoot JPG rather than raw but as a travel option, the Sony wins. If/we we do a new destination, I might be tempted to take the Fuji kit instead but since we usually just revisit familiar spots, it's the Sony that gets the space - AND I have space for its baby cousin (RX-100) and a GoPro with room for a change of clothes and extra kex!

TBH, I'm not too fussed about any extra bells and whistles that the v might have over the iv (or even my iii !) Having cut my teeth on relatively ancient film cameras, all I really want is the basics.
