Sorry - quite excited! Initial observations - better screen and viewfinder, much faster and more accurate focussing, handles nicely - feels quite similar but maybe just a bit higher quality. First snap as below - seems sharp enough to me!

You don't know how lucky that photo is. I've been after a golden oriole photo for years. We can hear them every day, all day in summer. But seeing one is usually confined to a quick glimpse as they fly away. They are the most wary bird I know. This one was right outside our bedroom window, about 40 yards away in full view. I had time to get out of bed, go downstairs for the camera and it was still there when I got back. I only got one shot though.

I've been playing around with one for a few days now Mike. ;)

"As I've just sold my property in the west end of London (completed last Friday) and decided to spend all of my time now back here in Kent I've not really had a good chance to give it a solid work out. The problem of weight (I'm still without much strength) is still there though so I'll only be able to use it for static subjects, so all I can say at the moment is I'll see how it goes"

I thought you might be! Glad to hear your house move is completed and I hope you are able to enjoy the Mk5 in Kent :)

It's not so much a move to Kent as I've had this place for a long time. It's just a sale of my place in London as I'm trying to slowly break away from my street photography and snap other things, so I have no reason to have a place in London anymore.

I'll try and give the Mk5 a good work out ASAP but I have no intentions of parting with my Mk4. I sold my other Mk4 as it just wasn't optically as good as this one, and the Mk5 will have to be optically at least as good as this one for me to gel with it.

Ah right I see - well for what it is worth I feel like my Mk5 might have a slight edge in sharpness over my old Mk4 (although I might be subconsciously trying to justify the purchase :LOL: ). Cheers

No Mike, I had the Mk5 on loan from a buddy who owns a photography store here in Kent to see if I liked it.

And though I think it's truly an "Excellent" bit of kit, for me there was no improvement in image quality over my Mk4. I carried out extensive testing against my Mk4 and the only improvement was faster focusing which don't need. Ideal for photographers like your good self that snap birds and quick moving subjects, but I don't snap those sort of subjects. So for me there was no point in keeping the Mk5. I returned it yesterday and I will continue with my Mk4 and post as often as I'm able on this thread.

Ah I see. There was a degree of GAS in my purchase I must admit and both cameras are great as you say :)

Hope you are able to get out with the Mk4 and get some shots to show me the error of my ways :LOL:

No errors on your side of the fence Mike, I think the Mk5 is ideal for you. It's just not needed for what I do, so no point in me wasting money on it.

I’m enjoying it (so much so it’s the only camera I have now!). It’s not night and day different to the mk4 but there’s enough there that the upgrade is worthwhile for me. Focusing on these birds for example seemed a lot easier and the battery just goes on for ever! I’ve even been getting some decent macro shots hence the decision to sell my other kit.
 
Trying to see how good a macro I can get - used a Sigma AML 72-01 for this one which gets you plenty of magnification at 600mm eq but I was using natural light only and running out of shutter speed at f8 when a smaller aperture would have given a bit more depth of field. Will try it with flash next time :)

Macro is looking great Mike, I may go down the mk v route also later. Some fine detail in the eyes of that dragonfly.
