Yes
Went out with the new 10 stop ND filter today, was really pushed for time so only managed a couple of shots but both of them came out like this:

Whats happened!! 10 stop ND + polarizer, 4 min exposure, new memory card, viewfinder NOT covered. Would any of that lot point to this problem?

Many thanks, Rob.

I wasn't using a grad, just a circular solid ND filter. I take your point about covering the viewfinder but I was so pushed for time I didn't bother!

I reckon it's light shining in on an agle through the viewfinder

... and any other shots without the filter... do these come out OK..?

Yeh shots ive taken without the filter look OK (I've only had the camera a week) and I've just taken another long exposure (again 4 mins) from inside the house looking out of the window and its fine.

All I can think of is some stray light entering the viewfinder as Chris suggests BUT the sun was infront of me! :bang:

It's puzzling me because its a perfect line

The sun being in front of you is not going to stop the light getting in through the viewfinder.

If you turn your back on the sun, the world doesn't go dark does it?

Fair point Rob, I'd have thought that if light through the viewfinder was the cause though it would affect all of the image and not just 2/3 of it

Went back today to give it another go, without covering the viewfinder it came out exactly the same, with the viewfinder covered it was fine. So everybody, a tip: if you want exposures as long as this (4 mins), get that viewfinder covered!! This is the finished image:

I had that exact same issue with my 10 stop once. I wondered what had caused it as it was part of a 4 shot pano doing 20 second exposures. The last frame was quite similar to the first posted picure with a colour split down the middle. Took ages in photoshop to correct it but I managed!!

Yeh thats what it was Richard, it sorted the problem straight away. Can't believe you managed to correct it in PS, hats off to you for that, I'd have no chance!!

lol it took forever!!! Have a look at the first pano in my pano gallery on my website (on Neist Point, Isle of Skye). It was a frame from that image! Made even hard because there was a natural graduation in the sky, so I had to adjust it by looking at the land mass only. NOT fun! lol

I'll only ever use the ND on my D3 and that thankfully has a build in cover for the viewfinder, guess what I'll be using in future lol

is it not worrying that light from the viewfinder "leaks" onto the sensor?
does it do that for all shots?!?

No it doesn't do it for all shots, just ones with a really long exposure. The majority of normal length exposure shots are taken with my eye to the viewfinder anyway so this wouldn't be a problem. I suppose it must be 'normal' for light to leak with long exposures anyway as Canon provides a viewfinder cover with all of their cameras.

The 40D should have a little rubber eyepiece cover for this purpose, I'm sure it will be on the strap!
