I was just wondering if anyone could help in august I'm going to America for 3 weeks to Vegas, Los Angeles then San fransisco and I was wondering what people thoughts were on memory cards etc I've got 3 64gb sd cards and was wondering roughly how many photos that will hold ( will be shooting in raw ) and am planning on taking ALOT of pictures and didn't no another way around it other than buying more sd cards which I'm not going to need any other time other than the holiday? Thanks
 
Hi Lewis, anyway you can download your images from the memory cards as you go?
Are you taking a laptop/net book or suchlike that you can use an external hard drive with?

Hi mate, well I didn't really want to bring my laptop etc as will be a lot of travelling bit has crossed my mind as I don't really no any other way
 
If you needed extra cards would they be cheaper to buy in the USA ???

On my Fuji cameras It registers that I can take about 1200 pics on a 8gb 95mbs card in JPEG, size large and fine quality, I dont shoot RAW. Based on my Fuji XP or XT this would equate to approx 28000 pictures with 3 64gb cards, providing my maths are right.

Pretty sure memory cards will be easy to find over there. Use what you have now, if you find you are running out, buy a couple more.
 
Put one of your cards (empty) in the camera and the camera will tell you how many photos it can record.

I've never used a large capacity card and I assume they are as reliable as smaller cards, but if one of your cards fails when it is full(ish), you could lose a lot of shots.

Hello Lewis. I agree with @Tringa that if one of your memory cards fails when it's full then 64 gig of photos will equate to a fair few lost images. My preference would be to go with 16gb cards at a maximum and just take more with me.

I can get 452 pics on a 16gb card from my D7000 shooting lossless compressed 14bit raw files. I believe the 3200 only shoots 12bit raws although it has more mega pixels which probably mean a slightly bigger file than mine can create.

Look at your file sizes and tot up how many per gb then times it by the size of your card.

Sometimes but if your say going to buy them from a local shop in the US,can be cheaper buying them online here :)
 
Thanks everyone, will probably bring the others halfs notebook and my hard drive and just put them on it as i go to be on the safe side! :)
 
I can fit around 500 RAW D800 files on a 32GB card, I never use any larger than that. 3 of them gives me 1500 RAW files. Plenty enough for any situation. D3200 RAW files will be smaller, on a 64GB card you should get about 1000 images. Will you take that per week on hols?? I doubt it.

Also, some would say never delete files on cam, but I have nothing against it, I do it all the time. Just go through them as you go along, you'll know which ones you don't want, and don't hold back on deleting. You really don't want 3000 RAW files to have to go through when you return!

Why not buy a couple of smaller Gbt cards whilst over there and then sell them when you return home? If it helps to give you an idea, I've visited all the cities you mention several times and took well over 600 photos each time. My philosophy is if you like it you can keep it but you can't keep what you've not taken! Shoot away, and enjoy your holiday :woot:
