Hi folks - just pondering what to pack for a holiday which will include a big city or two, family stuff, beach [but not swimming weather] and mountains. I have full frame body which I think i am going to take rather than a crop sensor body. What would be your walkabout lens?And, if only able to take one more, what would be your other lens?

Depends on what lenses you have
I would take a 24-105 as that's what I have.
On the one more front again it depends what you have, if I had them and wanted to take two then a 17-40+70/200 f4, or if you wanted a splurge and buy specifically for the holiday one of the Sigma or Tamron superzooms
 
We went to Turkey for our family hol's, and I took the D800 with an 85mm, and a fuji x100s. I didn't feel I was missing anything really. So I'd say a 35mm, and an 85. Both neat and compact enough. You get the wide-ish angle, and a bit of length for stuff happening in the distance. Without having to carry a tonne weight about.

Either that or a medium zoom like a 24-70. And do take some kind of compact if you have or can borrow one.

I know I was real glad of the compact on the side, around the beach and pools. I didn't attract any unwanted attention and could happily snap away at my kids enjoying themselves :)

Yes, definitely a zoom... thanks guys - any more thoughts out there?
 
If I was going to take an FF SLR and just one lens, it would be the 24-120 f/4 VR. However, if I was taking just one SLR and one lens, it would be my old D70 and an 18-270 VC.
On our last holiday I took just compacts and a bridge superzoom but could have happily just taken the compacts (one's waterproof for snorkelling).
 
Depends on how much kit you want to take with you, but if you are looking at the minimum, then I'd suggest a mid range zoom.

If you are after specifics, as has been said, depends on what lenses you have...
 
I take my 7D body and a 70-200mm F4 L. Light enough to carry around all day and you get a decent focal range, the landscape shots might leave you wanting though...
 
Thanks everybody - I think it will be 24-105, 50 for when I don't want the weight. Got a wide zoom as well as a 28 prime so will have to decide between them next. My Lee filters wouldn't work on the 28 prime... hmm. If I am feeling strong, might take the longer zoom - I'm 5' 2" in my shoes/ :)
