Yes
hi all just wondered what people did when they go abroad with there photo gear,do they just carry it about with them all the time or leave it in the hotel room when they go out ,just a thought for when i go thanks guys

It depends on on what I take. On my last holiday I took my d90, 18-70 and 35mm with my camcorder and it fitted nicely in the hotel safe.

A friend who takes a lot more takes his bag with all the kit with him every where you the go.

thanks when you say hotel safe is that one in the hotel room or like a main safe in the hotel

most places have a small safe in the room.

Im deciding if i should take my d40 to Dominican this month, its not a lot of value i know but its the hassle of keeping it safe

If my kit's left in the room, it's in its bag, usually under the bed or in the wardrobe. Then again, we usually stay in the same small, family run hotels which are (IMO) far more secure than the hi-rise types.

A few years ago, when we were on Crete, I left my (compact) camera on the seat of the open topped Suzuki Vitara for a couple of hours and it was still there when we got back to the car. Parked in the middle of Rethymnon. Not sure I would do the same with the D800 but I didn't leave the compact on purpose.

Yes, the safe was in the hotel room.

Thanks guys how big are these safes usually ,would they fit say a 7100 70-300 lens and a couple of small lens thanks, and how safe are these

Depends very much on the hotel! Some are a smallish MDF box bolted to the back of a wardrobe, some are a bit sturdier. I reckon that kit would fit in most that I've come across, although I personally wouldn't be happy sleeping in a room that was insecure enough to need stuff locking away...

its just through the day nod when I fancy camera free time, when the cleaners etc are in and out

Best set up a hidden camera - you never know what those cleaners do with your toothbrush... (I should point out that I've known the cleaner at the hotel we use most for almost 20 years and that the owner of the other apartment we stay at most often does all the cleaning herself. I've left a few £,000s worth of kit with no worry at all.)

I rarely travel abroad with more gear than I intend to use, body and a couple of lenses. Nothing that won't fit into a discreet non-camera bag. For a city trip, body and 30mm gets me >90% if shots.
