Home studio setup queries

Hi all,

I am very keen to get tips on setup options to photograph my 1 year old.

I have been thinking of either using 3-4 Yongnuo flashguns which I should have but not sure about reflectors/softboxes?
Would I be better off getting a continuous lighting system?

Also I have seen loads of muslin backgrounds and stand kits on the bay. Will these be able to do the job? (baring in mind I am not looking for a pro setup).

Also any tips on lens and even a pic of lighting setup would be useful.

PS My camera is a 450D.

Many thanks

To go with your flashguns, radio triggers, stands and brackets, softboxes, brollies and a reflector or 2.

As for backgrounds, Muslin is awful (I know I have one) paper rolls are better, what kind of thing are you thinking?

(please don't say white seamless)

I was going to start with plain and simple

I did come across the creativity backgrounds site which seems to have a decent selection of backgrounds.

If you want plain and simple, stay away from white.
I'd go with flash guns over continuous every time.
Go for a grey background. Paper rather than cloth.
If it for shooting a baby, it's amazing how small the b/g needs to be.
No need to spend big bucks on 10ft wide rolls.
Bung in a reflector and the jobs a goodun.
Dean.

I wouldnt get hung up on loads of lights in use at one time.
I would start with one light and a reflector then if need be move to two lights.

As said above for small kids your background doesn't need to be big.
I've started doing newborn/toddler setups with a mere sheet of 4x4 foot piece of MDF (wallpapered on each side) and my subjects fits in it perfectly.

I agree with plain background but not white.

There's a thread in the portraits section showing setups and results, you should check it out. A lot of good information in there.
