After lots of research (about 20 minutes!) I decided I could and would convert my old Sony DSC P93A compact to infrared just for the fun of it.
I dismantled the camera casing, removed the sensor assembly and the hot mirror that blocks IR fell out. I measured it and decided it felt about the same thickness as my cheap ebay IR 720 filter.
I then took a pair of pliers to the IR filter to remove the filter ring, got a glass cutter from B&Q and cut a square from it slightly larger than the hot mirror. Then I got my diamond file and filed the square of black glass to the same size as the hot mirror, reassembled it and tested:eek:

Well what do you know - I now have a 720NM IR compact that takes shots handheld:D
The shot below has had minimal processing - just a quick channel swap and automatic colour and contrast.

Not bad for a first bash at an IR conversion methinks:thinking:

Have now bought a Nikon D40X and done exactly the same to that:bonk:

Took about an hour with the diamond file to get the little step in the filter edges right (ish) but it works a treat:D
