hood or not?

Hi everybody im looking at a nikon 70-300mm lens but i was just wondering which is better, to have the hood or not? and Also what difference does it make? thanks alot.

I alwasy put mine on, so if i do accindently drop at or smack it against something by accident it should come out in a better condition than if you done one of those things without one on.

always use a hood unless it's totally impractical to do so

Same here hood everytime,cut out stray light,and can help with flare.

The only time I shoot without a hood is with my Canon 100 L macro, which is unpractical with the short distances for focussing. All the rest of the time I use a hood and no UV filter and don't have a problem.
