Hoods for a 18-55mm lens

Took some shots of the Granddaughter yesterday playing in the garden and noticed a little to much light coming in on some (the sun was at a 45 degrees angle to me).
Would a lens hood help this? Also what is the difference between these 2 hoods?

Just like putting a round peg ina square hole, the hole has to be bigger that the peg in all dimensions. With the petal hood, you get a degree of shielding that is more precisely matched to the lens. In practice, I'm not convinced one actually sees that much difference.
 
The front element of the 18-55 rotates so that means the petal hood is out. The standard canon (or copy) one is your best bet.
 
Good point, well made. Front element of this lens rotates so petal hood is no use.
 
Nikon sell a plain bayonet hood for this very lens, just sold mine (with hood and camera) a few weeks ago. Tbh I don't think the hood made any real difference to stray light, my hand was always much bigger and more quickly deployable :-)

As someone has already said, short zooms tend to be supplied with petal hoods matched to focal lengths, but I suspect they're more to protect the lens from knocks at the business end than block stray light. IMVHO of course ;)
