Hello,

Im working for a small publishing company and have been tasked with finding a system to make life easier for our designers and freelance photographers.

We are looking for a system which allows photographers to access it using an ftp program to upload their photos into folders we provide them as an individual / set up for a specific photo shoot.

Once uploaded the photos should be easily maintainable and viewable in a gallery making it easy for the designers to download and browse the photos during the design stages.

Im not looking for something like webshots or flickr, it needs to be a bit more advanced and commercial.

I was just wondering what you use or what your experiences have been. Im aware I havent explained this very well so if you want me to go into a bit more detail Ill try and pad it out a bit more.

Thanks for any the help.

Tom

any webdev worth their salt should be able to sort this for you, there are a couple on here who might offer to help

probably depends on your budget though

Alex - I had thought of that but as Neil suggests there are off the shelf image libraries available.

Neil - I am aware of them and I have a nice big list. But I was wondering if anybody had any experience with any of them, any recommendations etc.

Baring in mind how much storage high quality photos take up, do you put it on your own server which will have bandwidth, storage, backup costs associated with it. Or are their companies that provide a good solution with a sufficient amount of storage space, bandwidth etc.

To put it simple. Who are the dropbox of photography?

Thanks for the help

fotopic.net would seem to tick all your boxes.. I use them.. I have over a hundred thousand pics online witht hem.. the pro service is what you need... grab a free account and try it out.. the control panel will tell you all you need to know :)

there are also off the shelf image librarys available

Canto Cumulus is one of the long standing products in the area (I was selling the low-end version in the mid 90s when I worked at an Apple retailer).

It's a full Digital Asset Management system designed to handle all your digital media, such as Quark, Indesign and Illustrator files and other images. As such, it's intended to help you manage your entire publishing workflow with version control and approvals and licensing management, not just storing and retrieving photographs. It has a fully featured web front end these days.

JPY in Surbiton are one of their two UK resellers. Nice company to do business with when I've bought networking gear from them for my company.

It does a bit more than you were outlining in your OP, but it may be worth a look.
